A high-speed train is the perfect way to travel between Turin and Milan. The journey from city center to city center takes only an hour, so you can even make it a day trip! If you're planning to travel the same route, here's everything you need to know.

Milano Centrale’s glass ceilings

Milano Centrale’s glass ceilings

Route overview

Both Turin’s stations, Porta Nuova and Porta Susa, are central. All high-speed Turin to Milan trains stop at Porta Susa. Many, but not all, stop at both. Do check before you book.

Milan has 4 stations. For visiting the center or connecting onwards to Italy or Switzerland, Milano Centrale is the most convenient.

A train between Turin and Milan can take as little as 55 minutes. Leaving the Alps behind, you travel through the plains of northwest Italy. Although not an especially scenic journey, it was pleasant and stress-free.

Transportation experience

I love the chilled Regionale commuter trains, but on the Turin to Milan route, I try to avoid them. You almost double the journey time and arrive in Milano Porta Garibaldi, not Centrale.

I booked in advance to secure a discounted high-speed ticket. I traveled on a Saturday, so the Premium and Business seats were on sale. The price difference was only a couple of euros, and the Business carriages are a treat. But for a 57-minute journey, I decided to stick with standard class.

Unless your final destination is Malpensa airport, buses are not a great option. They arrive in Lampugnano, far from the center, and take longer.

Departure station

I booked a departure from Torino Porta Nuova, a 10-minute walk from my hotel. This bright and light 19th-century building is one of Italy’s busiest stations. It has everything you expect, including luggage deposit, stores and eateries with specialities from Piedmont, the rest of Italy and beyond.

Arrival station

As the most central of Milan’s stations, Centrale was my natural choice. It is also a grand, iconic building, worth a visit in itself. To the side is an artisan food hub called Mercato Centrale, where I had a delicious pizza before my train to Switzerland!

Schedule & frequency

With both Trenitalia and Italo offering services, there are multiple high-speed trains per hour from Turin to Milan, from early morning to evening. Most evening services only stop at Porta Susa, not Porta Nuova.

Onboard experience & services

Boarding at Porta Nuova was smooth. When the platform appeared on the board, I headed there and found my carriage and seat. There are no ID checks to get on the train. You can expect inspectors to check your paper or e-ticket during the journey. In Standard Class, you get free Wi-Fi, phone chargers at your seat, and room for luggage overhead and at the end of the carriages. Italian trains are often a few minutes late, and this was no exception.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

As there are different types of trains and multiple stations in both Turin and Milan, clarity is everything. When I booked on Omio, the travel options were clearly displayed. That helped me select the most convenient one. On this occasion, Trenitalia had a better price than Italo. But I have travelled the route on Italo as well, and the service is similar.

  • Arrive at Torino Porta Nuova (or Porta Susa) at least 20 minutes earlier for stress-free boarding.
  • Connecting with another service in Milan? Leave a couple of hours to visit Centrale station and treat yourself to some delicious food.

Conclusion

Traveling from Turin to Milan by train is an easy journey between two beautiful stations and two of northern Italy’s most fascinating cities. And if you book in advance on Omio, it can even be very affordable too!
