Route overview
The journey from Rome to Siena covers around 143 miles (230 km) and usually involves a transfer, often in cities like Florence or Chiusi. I started my trip at Roma Termini and arrived in Siena after about 4 hours, with a connection of around 50 minutes in Chiusi. In my case, the connection was easy to manage, with enough time to switch platforms without rushing. The route is operated by Trenitalia, combining regional and high-speed trains depending on the itinerary.
Transportation experience
I booked my tickets through Omio. Since the journey includes a connection, I received two digital tickets, one for each leg of the journey. The process felt simple, and even with a connection along the way, everything was stress-free.
Departure station
Trains to Siena depart from Roma Termini, the main railway station in the city and one of the busiest in Italy. The station is large and can feel a bit overwhelming at first, especially if you’re not used to major transport hubs. Following the departure boards and locating the correct platform was easy, but it’s a good idea to arrive a bit earlier to give yourself enough time to get oriented. There are also plenty of cafés and shops inside the station if you need anything before departure.
Arrival station
Siena’s train station is smaller and much easier to navigate than Roma Termini. It’s located just outside the historic center, so you’ll need to take a bus, taxi, or walk uphill to reach the old town. I simply took a local bus right outside the station and reached the center in about 5 minutes.
Schedule & frequency
There are frequent train connections between Rome and Siena, with departures from early morning until the evening. Most journeys involve one or two transfers. My train departed around 11:00 am, and the 50-minute connection gave me enough time to grab a sandwich before continuing.
Onboard experience & services
The trains on this route are simple but comfortable. Seating depends on the train type, with assigned seats on high-speed services and open seating on regional trains. My train wasn’t too crowded, which made the journey more relaxed. The carriage was clean, and there was space for luggage overhead and at the end of the carriage. It has all of the basics, including air conditioning, power outlets at the seat and restrooms near the luggage storage.
Ticketing advice & budget breakdown
I booked my Rome to Siena train tickets a month in advance and paid around €22 for the entire trip. There are also more expensive options that include a high-speed train segment, which can slightly reduce travel time. Prices on this route can vary depending on the train type and time of booking, so it’s best to check options in advance.
