There is an excellent train service between Rome and Salerno, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. With frequent departures, there is always a train to suit your schedule. I really enjoyed making the journey by high-speed train from Rome to Salerno. Below, I’ll show you all you need to know about it.

The Rome to Salerno Frecciargento train

The Rome to Salerno Frecciargento train

Route overview

The bulk of the trains from Rome to Salerno are operated by Trenitalia, Italy’s national railway company. Trenitalia runs several types of trains between Rome and Salerno, with the premium Frecciarossa high-speed train being the best, followed by Frecciargento high-speed trains. The private high-speed train operator Italo also runs services between Rome and Salerno in competition with Trenitalia.

The distance by rail from Rome to Salerno is 260 kilometers (162 miles), with the fastest high-speed train taking just 1 hour and 30 minutes. InterCity trains, and especially regional trains, take much longer.

Transportation experience

I booked my Rome to Salerno train ticket on Omio, which was quick and very simple. I could easily view and compare all Trenitalia trains, as well as those of rival operator Italo, in a single search. I also appreciated Omio's transparent fare conditions, displaying whether tickets are refundable.

Departure station

Almost all trains from Rome to Salerno depart from Roma Termini, the main railway station of the Italian capital. This is a large and busy station, so it’s smart to arrive here at least 30 minutes before departure, especially if it’s your first time traveling by train in Italy. Termini station has many cafés, shops and restaurants to grab a bite or stock up on supplies. Check the departures board to see from which platform your train to Salerno departs. Before you can access the actual platform at Rome’s Termini station, you will need to scan the QR code on your ticket to open the barriers.

Arrival station

Salerno’s railway station is located in the city center, and it’s a straightforward 15-minute walk to the historic district. Buses to the Amalfi Coast depart from a bus stop in front of the station.

Schedule & frequency

There are dozens of daily departures from Rome to Salerno, with the first service starting around 6 am and the last around 11 pm.

Onboard experience & services

For my journey from Rome to Salerno by train, I traveled on an early-morning Frecciargento service operated by Trenitalia. These high-speed trains are slightly older compared to Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa or those of the private operator Italo, but they still offer excellent comfort.

I was seated in first class, with seats in a spacious 2+1 configuration. The first-class fare includes complimentary drinks and snacks. Each seat has a power socket, and there is also Wi-Fi on board. The train journey from Rome to Salerno is quite scenic. If you’re seated on the right-hand side you can see Mount Vesuvius shortly after the train leaves Naples for the final stretch to Salerno.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

I booked my ticket for the Rome to Salerno train about a month in advance and paid €40 for a first-class ticket. Keep in mind that Italian long-distance train tickets have variable pricing based on demand. They are generally cheaper if booked in advance. Booking several months ahead is especially wise during the summer or around national holidays. Tickets become expensive and can even sell out completely if you wait too long.

Top tips & recommendations

  • It’s best to take a high-speed train (either Frecciarossa or Frecciargento services, or an Italo train) on the Rome to Salerno route, as InterCity and regional trains take much longer.
  • If your final destination is the Amalfi Coast, an alternative route is to take a train from Rome to Naples, connect there onto a Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento, and then continue by bus.

Conclusion

I certainly enjoyed the high-speed train journey from Rome to Salerno. The train provided excellent comfort, and the views from the window were exceptionally beautiful. Ready to go? Book your seat on Omio to simplify your trip.
