By Sara Mastellone

I’m not a big driver and traveling from Rome to Positano by train (and bus) felt far less stressful than I expected. Instead of dealing with traffic and winding coastal roads immediately, the train allowed me to enjoy my journey and, once I arrived in Salerno with the Italo train, I was able to catch the convenient connection with Itabus and arrive directly in Positano.

Fontana di Trevi in Piazza di Spagna, Rome.
The train route from Rome to Positano usually involves taking a high-speed train (Italo or Frecciarossa) from Roma Termini to Naples or Salerno, followed by a bus (or ferry) connection to Positano. The full journey generally takes between 3 and 4 hours but it’s absolutely worth it.
This time too I booked my tickets through Omio, which made organizing a multi-step trip much easier. I could compare Italo train schedules and find the connection with Itabus that worked best for my timing without having to search separately for every leg of the journey.
Roma Termini is the main train station of Central Italy, so it is busy but well organized also. I arrived early enough to grab a nice breakfast before boarding and had no trouble finding my platform.
Arriving near the Amalfi Coast always feels exciting. Once I reached the final stretch toward Positano, the scenery completely changed into astonishing cliffs, sea views and colorful villages (should I repeat that the iconic view of Positano is unforgettable?) everywhere.
High-speed trains from Rome to Salerno (and Naples too) run very frequently throughout the day, often every 30-60 minutes, so it was really easy to find the perfect departure time for my southern journey.
The high-speed train to Salerno was modern, fast, and comfortable, with air conditioning, spacious seating, and plenty of luggage space. The first part of the trip felt incredibly smooth and relaxing. Also, the bus Itabus was comfortable enough and the window seats added an extra touch of wonder.
I spent around €40 in total for the journey, though prices can range between €25 and €70 depending on how early you book and the connection type you choose.
