Every time I travel from Madrid to Zaragoza, the first option that comes to my mind is the train. The high-speed train service from these two cities makes the journey fast and easy. On my last trip, I decided to take the early morning Ouigo train as I wanted to reach Zaragoza as early as possible to utilize my day optimally. The short distance makes the plan feasible as the train journey is short.

Zaragoza city center
Madrid and Zaragoza are linked by Spain's high-speed rail network, covering a distance of 320 km between the two cities. High-speed trains from the cities are operated by Ouigo, Renfe AVE, Avlo, and Iryo, which take around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. The trains run frequently from both cities, making the journey easy.
I boarded the train at Madrid Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes. The reason for this is that this is the main departure point for high-speed trains towards the north-east of Spain. As the train was departing very early in the morning, the station was relatively less crowded than usual. Once I passed through the boarding gates, the train started right on time. The journey was very quick. Within an hour or so, the train had crossed the dry lands of central Spain and was approaching Zaragoza.
Madrid Puerta de Atocha–Almudena Grandes is one of the main high-speed rail termini in Spain and serves a large number of departures daily. To access the platforms, a quick check of tickets and security checks are necessary, and arriving 20 to 30 minutes prior to the start of the journey makes for a smooth transition.
The train pulls into Zaragoza-Delicias, a main railway station in the city. As I had arrived very early in the morning, it was still quite quiet, and only a few cafes were open. Following a early start and a train journey, I was already hungry, and finding one of these open cafes became my first requirement.
There are high-speed trains that travel from Madrid to Zaragoza. The trains run regularly throughout the day. There are many departures each hour. There are also early morning departures, like the one I took, which is great for a full day in the city.
Ouigo trains are for high-speed travel. However, the level of service is less than that of some AVE trains. The seating is comfortable for a short trip like this. There is space for luggage above the seats and at the ends of the train. As the trip is just a little over an hour, most people just relax, check their phones, or look out the window as the train speeds across the countryside.
The price of the ticket depends on the train you are taking and how early you have booked your ticket. For this trip, I have paid around 19 euros. This is a relatively common price for an Ouigo train when booking a ticket in advance. The high-speed trains on this route can be a bit more expensive, depending on the train you are taking.
