For a weekend getaway in Hamburg, my favourite option is to take Deutsche Bahn's ICE train. I love how it connects both Berlin's and Hamburg's city centers, something that taking the plane doesn't do. The route is convenient and, when booked in advance, quite affordable. For extra comfort and peace of mind I would highly recommend reserving a seat.
Route overview
You can easily go from Berlin to Hamburg by train in under 2 hours, covering around 255 kilometers (160 miles) between two of Germany's most interesting cities. For me, the train is the best options as it is affordable, convenient and furthermore sustainable. The most common provider due to its high frequency is Deutsche Bahn (high-speed ICE or Intercity trains), but FlixTrain is also a good option. Trains usually depart from Berlin Hauptbahnhof and arrive and Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, making it easy to reach from almost anywhere in the two cities.
Transportation experience
After booking my ticket there was little planning to do before getting on the train. Other than planning when to get there, I love how seamless the experience of preparing for train travel is compared to traveling by plane. You don't need to worry as much about luggage and documents, and can arrive to the station close to the departure time.
Departure station
Berlin Hauptbahnhof is a big station with multiple levels and options for food and shopping. The monitors conveniently point you to your platform. Updates are also communicated effectively and in case it's needed there's Deutsche Bahn service counters and staff around the platforms.
Arrival station
Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is conveniently connected to Hamburg's main public transport options. It also offers extensive food and shopping options to get what you need right upon arrival.
Schedule & frequency
The connection between Berlin and Hamburg is a very popular route, so there are train options throughout the day, and most of them aren't fully booked. Some options require transfers, but I recommend going for a direct train, which often costs around the same or just a bit extra.
Onboard experience & services
The onboard experience is smooth and comfortable. If you have booked a seat (highly recommended), your ticket will display your car and seat. You can grab a snack or a coffee at the cafe car and either take it back to your seat or enjoy it right there (at the bar or tables). The monitors will also conveniently inform you of updates in the schedule and how far along in the journey you are.

I recommend booking at least three weeks in advance to avoid last minute, higher, prices. For extra comfort, I would also reserve a seat. If you don't, you will need to check in the displays over the seats and find a free one for your self. DelayI was travelling to Berlin because I wanted to fly from there to Stockholm.
So of course it was bad that the train left on time at 06:48. But it arrived about three quarters of an hour late.
As it was early, I partly slept and didn't use the toilets, the service or the on-board bistro.
I also didn't use the charging facilities or the Wi-Fi. But they are definitely available for those who need them.
Basically, I like travelling by train. It's quick, convenient and cheap. I paid just €18.47 for the journey.
However, a delay is very unfavourable, especially if you have to get to the airport.
You are therefore often forced to plan time buffers. These then become annoying if the train arrives on time and you have to wait for hours.
Nevertheless, I generally recommend travelling by ICE.

Panic because of strikeI travelled from Hamburg to Berlin by train in the morning. The decision was made quite quickly - direct route, no changes, and simply efficient in terms of time. I wanted to arrive as relaxed as possible, so the train connection sounded like a solid solution.
As soon as I boarded, I had the impression that the train was well organised. There was enough space, my reserved seat was easy to find and the compartment made a neat impression. The atmosphere was calm, nobody was talking loudly on the phone or blocking aisles with luggage - that was pleasant.
What struck me as particularly positive was that the air conditioning was neither too cold nor too hot, and I was able to charge my mobile phone without having any problems with the power socket. However, the wifi only worked in sections, but I didn't find this particularly annoying as I was working offline.
The toilets were usable, but could have done with an intermediate clean towards the end of the journey. There was a bistro area that was open, but I had food with me and didn't make use of it. The service on board was discreet but friendly.
Overall, it was a stress-free journey that ran on time and gave me a good start to the event in Berlin. I can't comment on the price, as the ticket was organised for me - but in terms of the process, everything worked well.

If the train arrives on time, as in my case, then 1 hour and 44 minutes with a car cannot be beaten for a distance of approx. 300 km. However, it is a good idea to download a radio play or film in advance, as the internet connection keeps breaking down. Even continuous phone calls are not possible on this route... Hopefully this will be better with the next ICE generation.
