Bolzano is one of Italy’s hidden gems and the Bolzano to Milan train route was an easy yes for my recent trip back to Milan! Whether it’s your first time exploring northern Italy or you’re commuting for work, this journey feels like part of the adventure rather than just a transfer: the panoramic views of the Alps are unparalleled. Let me walk you through my experience and share some tips for making your ride more smooth and enjoyable.

Strolling through the center of Bolzano.
Traveling from Bolzano to Milan by train takes around 3.5 to 4 hours, covering roughly 320 kilometers (200 miles) through the heart of the Italian Alps and Lombardy’s famous plains. For comfort, scenery, and efficiency, I think this is the best way to get between these two cities. Trenitalia offers Frecciarossa and Frecciargento high-speed options, departing from Bolzano/Bozen station and arriving at Milan Centrale, both very accessible from the city centers (specifically, Bozen station is only 5-10 minutes by foot to the city centre).
Booking my Bolzano to Milan train on Omio made the process effortless. I opted for an early Frecciarossa for value and timing (I had the rest of the day to enjoy Milan). The train wins hands-down: no airport lines, no extra transfers, and the views of mountains turning into plains are worth every minute of this journey.
Bolzano/Bozen station is small, charming and manageable. Grab a cappuccino and a pastry from one of the local cafés before boarding, and take a moment to admire the Alps peeking through the station windows before departing.
Milano Centrale train station, on the contrary, is grand and busy, but also easy to navigate with clear signage, taxis, metro, and buses right outside. In addition to convenient connections, you can find all kinds of shops and services right inside the station, and in just a few minutes by metro you can reach the Duomo.
Trains from Bolzano to Milan depart roughly every 1-2 hours. My early morning Frecciarossa made it easy to start exploring Milan by mid-morning. Also, morning departures tend to be less crowded and give the best light for mountain views (weather permitting).
My Second Class seat on Frecciarossa was surprisingly spacious, with a table, power outlets and plenty of legroom. Wi-Fi worked intermittently, so I downloaded some TV series in advance as I always do. Luggage rules are generous, and there’s a small café car if you want coffee or a snack (but I suggest you to score one last chocolate wafer in Bolzano before boarding). Watching the snow-capped Alps gradually transform into Lombardy’s plains was like riding through a living postcard.
My ticket cost around €25-27 for second class; direct trains are more comfortable than trains with connections but slightly more expensive. Check Omio for discounts, flexible tickets, and seating options, and remember to reserve a window seat for maximum enjoyment of this train journey.
