During one of my recent excursions along the Spanish Mediterranean coast, I had to make a trip from Valencia to Alicante, as I had a flight to catch that day. For such journeys, I normally prefer to take the train. It is more direct and predictable, avoiding traffic that may accumulate along the motorways.

View from accommodation to street
The distance from Valencia to Alicante is approximately 125 kilometers, and there are several direct trains that run from one place to the other every day. On average, the trains take more than two hours, but some may take less depending on the type of train. Since the trains are direct, traveling from one place to the other is quite straightforward.
I departed Valencia rather late in the morning, giving myself time to reach Alicante before going to the airport. I have driven this part of the Spanish coast before; one time, I rented a car from Valencia and drove towards Benidorm. There was more traffic than I had thought. After that experience, the train seemed the easiest option.
The train started from the main station in the city center of Valencia. This is a very easy station to find your way around, and you don’t really need to arrive early. I arrived a few minutes beforehand, got a coffee, and then waited for the platform to be announced.
A couple of hours later, the train arrived at Alicante-Terminal. The station itself is quite central, which makes it quite handy if you wish to carry on your journey to the airport or the town center.
Trains are available on a regular basis throughout the day, with several direct options to choose from. This makes it quite simple to plan this part of your trip around other travel arrangements, such as flights from Alicante Airport.
The train itself was quite comfortable for a trip of just over two hours. There was room on the rack above the seats for smaller bags, and everyone appeared to be carrying relatively light loads. Since I had a little work to finish up before my flight, I took advantage of the time to get a little work done on my laptop.
The prices for a ticket on this route will vary depending on the type of train service and whether or not you buy your tickets in advance. Here’s a rough estimate of what my costs might look like:
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €28 |
| Food & drinks | €3 |
| Travel to departure station | €2 |
| Travel from arrival station | €4 |
| Total | € 37 |
