Route overview

What's the best way to get from Nice to Paris? Flights from Nice to Paris are quick at 90 minutes, but can take as long as the train when you add travel to and from the airport and waiting time. And buses from Nice to Paris are cheap but slow at 10–13 hours. The train is my first choice, with gorgeous scenery along the Cote d'Azur and plenty of time to relax with a book. There are direct daytime trains from Nice to Paris Gare de Lyon or sleeper trains to Gare d'Austerlitz if you want to maximize your time.

Transportation experience

The Omio app is an easy way to search for and buy train tickets from Nice to Paris. This is a popular route, especially in the summer, so book well in advance if you can to get the cheapest fares. I paid online and downloaded my ticket ready, so I just had to scan it on my phone to get through the ticket gates at Nice Ville station.

Departure station

The train to Paris leaves from Nice Ville, the city's main station. It's within walking distance of the seafront, but I caught Tram 1 from the Old Town, which took 10 minutes. The station has cafés, shops, and toilets. Paris Gare de Lyon is located in the southeast of the city and is connected by Metro and RER. If, like me, you're heading to the Eurostar at Gare du Nord next, RER B links the two stations in around 15 minutes.

Schedule & frequency

There are around 5 direct TGV INOUI trains from Nice to Paris Gare de Lyon each day, from early morning to late afternoon. The journey takes between 5 hours 40 minutes and 6 hours.

Onboard experience & services

TGV INOUI services are high-speed, double-decker trains. They have two classes: 1st and 2nd. Both have Wi-Fi (free and decently fast), plug sockets, toilets, and luggage storage on each level, but 1st Class is a bit more spacious. You’re allowed two carry-ons and one small bag when traveling from Nice to Paris by train. There’s no weight limit, but you’ll need to be able to carry and store everything yourself. There’s also a café-bar on board with drinks, snacks, and hot and cold dishes, including sandwiches and salads. The route begins with a picturesque stretch along the Côte d'Azur, where I watched beaches, rocky headlands and marinas go by. Then, from Marseille, it picks up speed through the Rhone Valley and across rural France on its way to Paris.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

I booked my Nice to Paris train tickets in advance and paid €39 for a single journey in 2nd Class. Here's a

Top tips & recommendations

  • Book early for the lowest fares – tickets normally go on sale four months in advance.
  • Choose a seat on the upper deck if you can for the best views.
  • Order food or drinks from the café-bar online and you can skip to the front of the queue to pick it up.

Conclusion

Travelling from Nice to Paris by train is a convenient and easy way to travel between the two cities, and the coastal views are an added extra along the way. Omio makes ticket-buying easy and just leaves you to enjoy the ride. Bon voyage!

My journey from Nice to Paris was very fascinating. The price was reasonable and good value and also one of the best transport options. The staff were very friendly and polite. They always clarified my concerns and helped me out. The wifi was very efficient and stable. This allowed me to be productive during the trip as I was able to work on my laptop. However, no attention was paid to hygiene. The toilets and seats were not clean and tidy. Unfortunately, the train did not arrive in Paris on time and the noise level was rather annoying. Although there were some bad features, the journey was great!

Always a pleasure! The train was on time and also arrived on time, as there were no disruptions in between. The train arrived very quickly for the route and was shorter than by car. Otherwise everything was great, no changes and everything was relaxed. They could just work on the information display and make it more international.

The journey home was also a very pleasant experience. I definitely liked the friendliness of the staff, the impeccable hygiene and the comfort on the benches. However, I have to criticise the fact that my train was unfortunately not quite on time. The ticket price was definitely reasonable. It was quiet on the train and everyone was very relaxed and easy-going. I recommend the train connection.

Unfortunately, there were also several changes of trains, which made the journey more difficult. But a super great journey, especially for the good price!

The return journey was also super relaxed and fast! I was really surprised how fast the train travelled and how short the journey actually is in relation to the distance! Again, everything was great, the train was on time, there was no need to change trains and it was even equipped with wifi. The price was not cheap, but still fair! Fortunately, the staff on this journey could speak some English. I can only recommend it!

My first-class train journey from Nice to Paris on train 6096 was very comfortable. The locomotive provided me with an unwavering route and transported me from the coast to the epicentre of Paris in a brisk 5 hours and 30 minutes. I had a nice and relaxing journey and the train made our long journey very pleasant. The staff were very nice and helpful. The food selection offered an impressive array of goodies: a selection of fresh salads, sandwiches and hot main courses left a lasting impression. The coffee tasted good and there were some good wines, making the trip particularly enjoyable. During our journey, I was able to admire the beautiful surroundings on the Côte d'Azur and in the French countryside. The high-speed train (TGV) reached the city of Paris on time.
