One of the most important ports in France, and a tourist hotspot on the Cote d'Azur, Nice is a popular spot for beach lovers, art fans, and foodies alike. Founded by Greek settlers in around 350 BC, the city has prospered ever since. Nice can be divided into three sections: the modern center around the train station Nice Ville, Vieux Nice (the old town), and Port Lympia. All are linked by the Promenade des Anglais, which runs along the Mediterranean coast. Nice Ville is the main station in town, although Nice-Riquier is also available, and Nice Cote d'Azur Airport is a major arrival point. Tram and bus stops can be found all over the city.
There are a few possible ways to travel to the train station from Nice city center (which in this case tends to mean Vieux Nice). Most travelers will take the tram, which runs along the Promenade des Anglais, offering great views of the Mediterranean and the bay. The best place to catch the tram is probably Messena, and the stop closest to Nice Ville is Gare Thiers. Journeys will take 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, taxis can reach Nice Ville in around 10 minutes, depending on traffic, and active travelers can walk there in 25 minutes if they are familiar with the route. Those heading from Nice Port to Nice Ville can take the 38 bus then the L1 tram, or arrange taxis to transport them straight to the station. Finally, overground rail connections from Riquier may be handy for anyone in eastern Nice, while Nice-Philippe station serves the city's western suburbs, and Nice St-Augustin is the closest station to the airport.
Traveling to Nice Ville train station from Nice city center shouldn't be very time consuming, and the distances involved aren't that large. Nice Ville is approximately 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) from the heart of Vieux Nice, one mile (1.5 kilometers) from the Mediterranean coast, and three miles (four kilometers) from Nice Port. This means that tram journeys from the city center will take 10-15 minutes, those from the Promenade des Anglais will take 10 minutes, and transfers from the port can take 20-25 minutes. Anyone staying in hotels by the ocean can probably walk to Nice Ville in 20 minutes along Avenue Jean Medicin. The airport is also five miles (7.5 kilometers) away from Nice Ville, and the fastest transfers will take 20 minutes via trams.
Those with limited mobility should be able to travel to their train from Nice city center without too many problems, but choosing the right form of transport is very important. Buses in Nice aren't adapted for wheelchair users, so they can be ruled out. However, all city center trams are fitted with ramps to street level, ensuring that wheelchair users can board fairly easily. Taxis are not routinely disabled-friendly, but it's easy to find local companies with suitable minivans, and that may be the best option for arrivals traveling from Nice Port. Nice Ville Station is accessible, with ramps and elevators where required (although most facilities are on the same level). Staff are available at all times, and can provide wheelchairs if needed, and call boxes are also available to request any other assistance.
If you are wondering what to do near the train station and have an hour or two spare, there are plenty of sights within 15 minutes of Nice Ville station. Firstly, travelers can head to the beach with ease, and dip their toes in the Mediterranean. Trams run from Gare Thiers down Avenue Jean Medicin, and take 10 minutes. The same street is full of major apparel and consumer goods stores, so it's a good place to head if travelers need to stock up on essentials. The Matisse Museum is another local highlight, and is 10-15 minutes from the station by taxi, while the Marc Chagall Gallery is even closer, and can be reached on foot from the station in 10 minutes. Anyone who is a fan of modern art and design will love the permanent exhibitions at either gallery. There are also some beautiful churches within walking distance of the church. Highlights include the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St Nicholas, and the Gothic Basilica of Notre Dame, which possesses some stunning stained glass windows.
