One morning, when I was in Madrid, a friend of mine was visiting and had brought along her dog, and we decided to make a quick trip to Segovia, since we did not want to spend half a day just traveling. The train was, of course, the obvious choice. Segovia, it turns out, is not far from Madrid on the high-speed train, which means you can leave Madrid and arrive in Segovia almost before you have finished your coffee.

Interior of Segovia Cathedral
Segovia is also close to Madrid, with high-speed trains making it extremely quick to travel between the two cities. The distance between Madrid Chamartin and Segovia Guiomar takes only about fifteen minutes, making it one of the easiest day trips to take from Madrid. For our trip we took a OUIGO train running directly between the two stations. It felt less like a long journey and more like a quick hop out of the city.
We took a train from Madrid Chamartin around 10:30 in the morning. It was early enough to make the most of our day but not so early that we had to rush from our apartment. The fact that my friend had brought her dog along made the entire situation feel less formal. Once we had taken our seats on the train, we left Madrid and before we knew it, we were arriving in Segovia.
Madrid Chamartín is a key railway station in the capital and serves as the starting point for numerous high-speed routes going north. Even though it's quite large, getting around is pretty easy once you're inside. Since our train departed in the late morning, the station was bustling yet easy to handle. We stopped for a quick coffee before making our way to the platform and getting on the train.
About fifteen minutes later, we arrived at Segovia Guiomar station. The station is not in the historic center, so we have to go a little further to arrive in the city. We took one of the buses from the station to arrive in the city center. The buses, number 11 and 12, connect Segovia Guiomar to the city center in about twenty minutes. Once we arrived in the city, we went for a walk in the streets of the area of Calle Cervantes, doing a little window shopping before sitting in one of the terraces in the Plaza del Acueducto. Having a coffee in front of us and the Roman aqueduct in the background seemed like the perfect way to start the afternoon in Segovia.
Trains between Madrid and Segovia run regularly throughout the day, with multiple departures from Madrid Chamartín. That flexibility makes planning a day trip pretty easy. The 10:30 departure worked well for us — late enough to enjoy a relaxed morning in Madrid but still early enough to spend several hours exploring Segovia.
The OUIGO train was rather basic but comfortable, which is all you really need for such a short trip. The seats were the XL type, which gives you a bit more space than the regular seats. We opted to take seats on the upper deck since it has two levels. It gives you a slightly better view as you leave Madrid, but before you know it, the trip was already ending. It is also possible to travel with pets if you add the pet option to your ticket when you book your ticket with OUIGO trains. The cost of our ticket was 15 euros each for the trip (excluding the pet option), which was rather good considering it was a high-speed train.
Train tickets for this route can be quite affordable if you book in advance. On our trip, the OUIGO ticket cost about €15 per person. Here’s roughly what my travel costs looked like:
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €15 |
| Food & drinks | €4 |
| Travel to departure station | €2 |
| Travel from arrival station | €13 |
| Total | € 34 |
One of the easiest day trips you can make from the capital is probably taking the train from Madrid to Segovia. The trip is so short a journey that before you can even get comfortable in your seat, you’re already arriving and looking up at the aqueduct. It’s a trip that doesn’t even require much planning. And if you’re not vegan, then do yourself a favor and try some of that famous cochinillo while you’re there.
