Paulo Monteiro is a European rail specialist and creator of travel videos and guides. He documents first-hand train journeys across Europe and focuses on onboard comfort, practical tips and scenic moments.

I recently took Renfe’s AVE train from Girona to Madrid as part of my return journey across Spain. This direct high-speed service connects the two cities in under four hours, making it one of the most comfortable and efficient ways to travel between Catalonia and the Spanish capital. It’s the kind of trip where you can sit back, relax, and watch Spain unfold from coast to plateau, all while enjoying the spacious seating and smooth onboard experience Renfe is known for.

Route overview

The Girona to Madrid train covers approximately 700 km in just over 3 hours and 30 minutes. The route follows Spain’s high-speed rail network from the Mediterranean coast to the capital. After leaving Girona, the train passes through Catalonia’s rolling hills. It then continues across Aragón’s open plains and climbs toward the Castilian plateau before reaching Madrid. The changing scenery makes this one of Spain’s most rewarding long-distance AVE journeys.

Transportation experience

I booked my Renfe AVE ticket one month in advance on Omio. I secured a First Class seat for just €116.60. The online checkout was fast and straightforward. After paying, the mobile ticket appeared in Omio’s app right away. I had considered flying to Madrid, but I really enjoy riding in Spanish trains. Buses from Girona to Madrid are another option, which might be perfect if you’re on a budget and have time to spare.

Departure station

Girona Station sits within easy reach of the city centre. Just outside are several taxis and buses. Inside the station near the main waiting area, you’ll find a few cafés and convenience stores, such as Cafè Estació and Breadway. The station is compact and an ideal base for high-speed departures.

Arrival station

Madrid Puerta de Atocha Station is one of Europe’s most iconic train stations, famous for its architecture and indoor tropical garden. It's a great arrival point as it connects directly to the metro, as well as local Cercanías trains and city buses. You’ll find cafés like Starbucks and Burger King inside, along with other eateries and shops.

Schedule & frequency

Renfe AVE operates multiple AVE departures daily between Girona and Madrid, some direct and others with a short connection at Barcelona Sants, with trains running throughout the day. Travel time averages 3 hours 45 minutes, making it a comfortable alternative to flying. Early morning trains suit business travelers, while afternoon and evening options are ideal for a relaxed return to Madrid. I chose a late-morning service, which fit my schedule and gave me the chance to enjoy lunch on board.

Onboard experience & services

Traveling in First Class on Renfe’s AVE is a pleasure in itself. The cabin is spacious and quiet, with reclining leather seats, personal reading lights, and generous legroom. Wi-Fi is provided via PlayRENFE, which also offers an entertainment platform featuring movies, documentaries, and newspapers. The speed was good, and the connection stayed reliable for most of the journey. On the AVE train from Girona to Madrid, you can bring up to three pieces of luggage with a combined weight of 25 kg. Bags can be stored under or above the seat, or on racks at the end of each carriage. The train also had restrooms, which were clean and well maintained throughout the trip. During the journey, I was offered a menu with lunch options costing €25 each. I chose the Spanish menu, which included pollo al ajillo (garlic chicken on rice), Salmorejo cordobés, ensalada mixta (mixed salad), and fresh seasonal fruit. They also had a vegetarian and an international menu, but as the saying goes, when in Spain, eat Spanish cuisine. The food was tasty, and the presentation inviting. I particularly appreciated the bar car, a modern and cozy space where you can order drinks and snacks. It’s a nice place to stretch your legs and take a short break from your seat. Highlights along the way included glimpses of the Costa Brava’s rolling hills before the landscape opened into the Ebro River valley near Zaragoza, eventually giving way to the Castilian plains. With comfortable seating, a great meal, and wide-open views, this was an incredible way to travel to Madrid.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

Booking about a month in advance on Omio gave me a good First Class fare. Renfe’s AVE tickets include lounge access, a 25 kg luggage allowance, and excellent onboard service. Overall, it was a great value for comfort and convenience.

Top tips & recommendations

  • Seat selection: Sit on the left side for scenic views of Catalonia and Aragón.

  • Visit the bar car: Visit mid-journey for a chance to get out of your seat and stretch your legs.
  • Bring your ID: Keep your ID or passport handy, as staff may occasionally request it.
  • Treat the trip as a moment to recharge: The smooth ride and quiet cabin make it ideal for reading, working, or simply recharging.
