Which is the best train station to travel to Zermatt from?
Because Zermatt village is car-free, Zermatt ski resort is exceptionally well connected by train, with convenient routes from dozens of destinations. Choosing a departure city depends greatly on what you’re looking to get out of your winter adventure in Europe.
If you’re flying to Switzerland and then taking the train as the final leg of your journey, we suggest landing in Zurich or Geneva. Both of these airports have train connections to Zermatt directly at the airport. And although they are not technically the closest airports to Zermatt, they are the most convenient and have the most affordable flight options.
What’s the closest train station to the resort when I arrive in Zermatt?
When arriving in Zermatt, your train will end at the Zermatt train station. If you’re staying in the center of the village, you will be able to reach your hotel with a short walk or taxi ride.
If you are staying outside of the main village, such as in the Riffelalp Resort, you can cross the street to the train station across the road. There you’ll catch the Gornergrat Bahn, also known as the Matterhorn Railway. This is a local train that links the village with several of Zermatt’s highest outposts. It is also the best way to reach many of the slopes and ski lifts from the village. Before you arrive in Zermatt, check with your accommodations to see if you need to transfer to the Gornergrat Bahn after arriving in the village.
How much does a taxi cost from the train station to the resort?
Most destinations in town are a short 5-10 minute walk away from the Zermatt Train Station. There are also several 24-hour electric taxi fleets operating in Zermatt if you prefer to get around that way. Taxi costs vary greatly, but a taxi within Zermatt town center can cost anywhere between $15 and $35 (€13 and €32).
