On a recent trip across Spain, I needed to travel from Toledo to Barcelona. There isn’t a direct train between the two cities, so the usual route is to connect through Madrid. Technically you can also take a long-distance bus with companies like ALSA, but I tend to avoid buses for longer journeys. I get motion sickness fairly easily, so whenever trains are an option, I usually prefer them.

The distance between Toledo and Barcelona is quite considerable, which makes it necessary to change trains in Madrid when going from Toledo to Barcelona by train. The good news is that Spain has an excellent high-speed train network, which makes the second part of the journey very fast and comfortable. For this particular journey, I took an Avant train from Toledo to Madrid Atocha, then an AVE train heading to Barcelona Sants.
I departed from Toledo at 12:25 on an Avant train towards Madrid. The trip is a relatively short one, taking a bit more than half an hour, and before I knew it, I was arriving at Madrid Atocha. After arriving at 12:59, I had about 58 minutes before the next train, so I had time to walk around the station and grab something to eat. I ended up buying a bocadillo de tortilla de patatas and a Coca-Cola for about 8 euros before going to the platform for the AVE to Barcelona.
Toledo’s train station, though small, is surprisingly beautiful. Its present structure, inaugurated in 1919 and renovated in 2005, stands out for its Neo-Mudéjar style, with brick arches, ceramic tiles, and decorative elements. It’s actually quite in character with the city, as Toledo does have that kind of feel to it, even with practical infrastructure like a train station.
The train arrived at Barcelona Sants, which is one of the main transport hubs in the city and has connections to the metro and bus networks. Before leaving the train station, I had a large coffee, which cost around €2.10. It is the kind of coffee that one appreciates after a few hours on the train. From the train station, I went down to the metro and caught Line L1 to Universitat. I had planned to move around the city for the next few days, and so I purchased a ticket for 10 metro journeys, which costs just under €13.
While there isn’t a direct train from Toledo to Barcelona, there are frequent connections through Madrid throughout the day. While the second leg of the trip from Madrid to Barcelona is quick and comfortable thanks to the high-speed trains, the initial leg from Toledo to Madrid takes a while.
The second part of the trip was on an AVE train going to Barcelona. The seats on the train were spacious, offering enough legroom. There was enough space for luggage on the luggage rack above the seats. This train also offered power outlets, Wi-Fi, and a café-bar car. The trip takes a little over three hours, which is long enough to get some work done or just sit back and let the train ride through northern Spain.
Prices for this route vary depending on how early you book and the trains you choose. For this trip, the combined ticket from Toledo to Barcelona — including the Avant and the AVE — cost me around €100. Here’s roughly what my travel costs looked like:
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €100 |
| Food & drinks | €45 |
| Travel to departure station | €0 |
| Travel from arrival station | €0 |
| Total | € 145 |
Traveling from Toledo to Barcelona by train takes a bit of planning because of the transfer in Madrid, but the journey itself is smooth and comfortable. Once you arrive in Barcelona, it’s easy to continue straight into the city by metro. And if you’ve been on trains for most of the afternoon like I had, sitting down somewhere nearby for a quick coffee or snack isn’t a bad way to start your time in the city.
