After a few days exploring Madrid’s cafés and busy city streets, I decided to head east for Mediterranean sunshine in Valencia. I always choose the train, it’s the most reliable, relaxing and direct way to travel between Spanish cities. The Renfe's AVE service from Madrid Chamartín to Valencia Joaquín Sorolla connects the capital with the coast in about 2 hours, making it perfect for a spontaneous getaway or weekend escape.

Madrid City Center
This route covers about 360 km and is part of Spain’s high-speed rail corridor linking the capital with the Mediterranean coast. Trains run frequently throughout the day, with departures generally starting shortly after 6:30 AM and continuing into the evening. Services on this route are mainly operated by Renfe AVE, Avlo (Renfe’s low-cost high-speed option) and Iryo, a private high-speed operator. Journey times usually range from 1 hour and 50 minutes to 2 hours and 10 minutes, depending on the service and class. I took the Renfe AVE 11:30 AM train from Madrid Chamartín and arrived in Valencia at 1:25 PM. I also upgraded to First Class for a really low fee, which was exciting because I normally choose the standard fare. The extra legroom, wider seats and quieter cabin made the ride feel noticeably more relaxed. I can definitely say that this was the best way to travel from Madrid Chamartin to Valencia.
I booked my Madrid Chamartín to Valencia train ticket on Omio, which made it easy to compare departure times and seat classes. The checkout process was quick, and I liked having the ticket stored in the app with a QR code ready to scan at boarding. I also checked buses from Madrid to Valencia, but most buses take around 4 to 5 hours, which is considerably longer than the high-speed train. The train felt like the more comfortable and time-efficient choice. Since my train was late in the morning, I enjoyed breakfast at my hotel before setting off for my day in First Class.

Madrid City Center
Madrid Chamartín is one of the city’s major stations, located north of the center. It’s modern, well-signed, and easy to navigate. Arriving about 30 minutes early gives you time to find your platform and board calmly. The station has several food options, including Café de la Estación Chamartín for pastries and coffee. I grabbed a bottle of water before boarding since I planned to eat once I arrived in Valencia. Boarding was straightforward: Renfe staff scanned my ticket, checked my ID, and I found my seat with plenty of time to settle in before departure.
Upon arrival at Valencia Joaquín Sorolla, the coastal air hits you right away. The station connects directly to taxis and buses, and Valencia-Estacio Del Nord is only a short walk away if you need local Cercanías commuter trains. Operated by Renfe, this commuter network includes six lines that connect Valencia with nearby towns and villages, making it easy to continue your journey if needed. In my case, I headed straight to my hotel in the city center to drop my bags before walking toward the old town for tapas.
Renfe runs multiple AVE and Alvia services daily between Madrid Chamartin and Valencia, usually with direct departures every 30–60 minutes. Travel time ranges from about 1 hour and 50 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the train. I took the 11:30 AM service and arrived in Valencia at 1:25 PM, which was perfect timing for a late lunch. The late-morning departure also allowed me to enjoy a calm morning in Madrid before setting off.
First Class on the Renfe AVE train from Madrid Chamartín to Valencia made the journey feel exceptional. The seats were wide, reclined comfortably, and offered individual power outlets. I chose a window seat, which made napping easy and provided terrific views. The transition from Madrid’s plains to Valencia’s orange groves was even more enjoyable because of the large panoramic windows. The Wi-Fi on the train was reliable. I logged into the PlayRenfe portal by scanning my ticket code, and the connection was fast enough for streaming my Spotify music without lagging. Renfe’s luggage policy on AVE trains allows up to three pieces (≤25 kg total). That was more than enough for my carry-on and backpack, which fit easily overhead. I didn’t visit the café car this time since the ride was short, but they usually have sandwiches, coffee, and pastries available if you want something mid-journey. Once we pulled into Valencia, I grabbed my bags and headed out. Walking from the station to the city center is easy because it’s located right next to the city’s bullring and only about 200 meters from the town hall.
I usually book my tickets on Omio a bit early, and that typically saves me good money on routes like Madrid Chamartín to Valencia, especially when upgrading to First Class. I recommend booking about 4 weeks before departure if you can, as the more popular midday trains tend to rise in price closer to travel day. Here’s what I spent on this trip:
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €45 |
| Food & drinks | €1.50 |
| Travel to departure station | €0 |
| Travel from arrival station | €0 |
| Total | € 46.5 |
The Madrid to Valencia train route linking the capital to the Mediterranean coast is one of my favorite ways to travel in Spain. Renfe’s high-speed AVE train makes the journey comfortable and smooth, with plenty of space to relax and enjoy the scenery. It is quick, calm, and often more affordable than flying. If you are planning the same journey from Madrid Chamartín to Valencia by train, take a look at Renfe schedules and fares on Omio to choose a departure time that fits your day.
