The Bari to Lecce train is a scenic journey through Puglia. I took this train journey when I was traveling around Southern Italy, and found it both comfortable and efficient. Here’s all you need to know, from booking tickets to what to expect on board.

Train on the platform at Bari Centrale

Train on the platform at Bari Centrale

Route overview

It’s around 150 km (93 miles) between Bari and Lecce. Bari is above the “heel” of Italy, while Lecce sits to the southeast. I began my trip at Bari Centrale, and 1 hour and 25 minutes later, I arrived at Lecce Stazione. The trains from Bari to Lecce are run by Frecciarossa and often start in Rome.

Transportation experience

I booked my Bari to Lecce train ticket on Omio a week before departure. As I was taking a few trains in Italy, I used the app to have my tickets all in one place. I paid €19 for my ticket, but it could have been a little cheaper if I’d booked further in advance.

Departure station

The train to Lecce leaves from Bari Centrale. The train station sits to the south of central Bari, so depending on where you’re staying, you could walk. There’s also the Bari metropolitan railway service, a commuter train in the city, which connects some parts of the city. I walked to the station since I was staying close by. Bari Centrale is a vital connection point for the region of Puglia and the port of Bari. There are a few bars and small shops here, although I’d recommend purchasing food and drink beforehand.

Arrival station

The train from Bari arrives at Lecce Stazione. This is a smaller terminus station. It’s around a mile (1.5 km) from the Centro Storico, where most of the hotels are located. I was staying nearby, so I walked. There are also plenty of taxis outside the station, which take around six minutes.

Schedule & frequency

There are around 32 trains every day connecting Bari and Lecce. The first train leaves Bari Centrale just after 5:00 am, arriving just before 6:30 am. The last train leaves just after 11 pm, arriving in Lecce before 12:30 am. I took a train at around 10 am and arrived in Lecce in time for lunch.

Onboard experience & services

On the train from Bari to Lecce, I had a fixed table, and there was plenty of legroom. Restrooms and luggage racks were at each end, and the carriage was well air-conditioned. There was Wi-Fi, which worked when we were close to the cities. There were also plug outlets between seats. The journey itself was nice, with a window seat that made it even better.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

I paid €19 for this journey by train from Bari to Lecce. I think it could have been a little cheaper if I’d booked further in advance.

Top tips & recommendations

  • Avoid booking in the morning or in the late afternoon, when people may be commuting, as the trains can be busy.
  • Regional trains also run this route and may be cheaper, so check Omio to find the best option for you.
  • Sit on the left side of the train on the way to Lecce for the best views.
  • Sometimes the train can be delayed, so allow extra time if you’re connecting to regional trains in Lecce.

Conclusion

Taking the train from Bari to Lecce is an easy way to travel in Southern Italy and a reliable way to get between two of Puglia’s main cities. To make it even simpler, download your tickets in the Omio app before you travel, which will help keep everything smooth from start to finish.

A definite positive was that it was clean everywhere and consequently comfortable. The staff made sure that the journey went smoothly and without a hitch. I was also able to watch a film due to the good wifi and moderate volume. I recommend the trip.
Advantages
IconPunctual
Disadvantages
IconPersonnel
IconLack of hygiene
Unfortunately, the journey was a total disaster. The staff literally refused to help me. The toilets had not been cleaned. The only advantages were that the train was on time and that there was a good network connection. The price was okay. Nevertheless, I have to say that I definitely expected more in terms of cleanliness. Unfavourably only three stars.
Advantages
IconPunctuality
Disadvantages
IconCleanliness
The advantages of the journey included the punctual train, the competent staff and the fact that I had a good reception the whole time. There was only one drawback. Unfortunately, the toilets at both stations were not clean. But the train was. The journey took around 2 hours and took place in April.
Advantages
Iconhygiene
Disadvantages
Iconpersonnel
At the station, I had a few problems finding the right platform. So I decided to ask the staff. They didn't seem to know their way around and were rude to me. Fortunately, a woman who spoke Italian and German was able to help me. The train was free of dirt and there was wifi. I travelled for around 120 minutes. The train arrived in Lecce on time.
Advantages
IconAir-conditioned
Disadvantages
Icon-
It was a very warm morning. I was all the happier because the temperature on the train was regulated to a level that was very bearable. It was clean and I felt really good. In Bari I boarded from a very clean station and got off in Lecce in a place that was free of any kind of rubbish. I would still only give the journey 4 stars as I have experienced better journeys.
Advantages
IconThe toilets were clean
Disadvantages
IconThe train was not on time
The trip offers a whole range of positive aspects. These include the cleanliness, the price and the comfort. What is completely normal with the railway is that the train was 10 minutes late. I can therefore say that the journey was everything I expected it to be.
Advantages
IconCleanliness
Disadvantages
Icontoo late
The train arrived much too late. Nevertheless, the staff were always friendly and informed me immediately about the delay of almost 25 minutes. The compartment in which I was seated was kept very clean. The network connection was very good most of the time. The ticket price online was excellent. As far as I can tell, the 2-hour journey was a complete success.
Advantages
IconVery punctual
Disadvantages
Iconnot clean
I really liked the fact that my train was very punctual. The staff were very nice and I had very good wifi on the journey. But unfortunately I also have to mention a negative aspect. It wasn't clean. The journey took just over an hour and I changed trains once. The train number was 8303.
Advantages
IconIt was very clean
IconMy train was on time
Disadvantages
IconI have nothing negative
I have to report that I really enjoyed the 90-minute train journey. I didn't have to change trains and travelled on train number 8303. The staff were very attentive and polite. The cleaners did a good job. The train was very punctual.
Advantages
IconHeating
IconVery clean toilets
Iconpunctual
Disadvantages
IconPersonnel
IconPrice
The advantages I experienced on the journey included the cleanliness of the toilets, the punctuality and the fast network connection. The journey took place in winter and I was therefore very happy that the train was well heated. Two disadvantages are the price of the ticket, which was too high for me, and the staff, who were rather dismissive towards the passengers.
