Traveling from Assisi to Rome by train is one of the best and easiest ways to connect this peaceful Umbrian town with Italy’s busy capital. The journey on board a Trenitalia regional train gives you a chance to sit back and enjoy the changing scenery along the way. I’ve taken this route myself, and here’s what you can expect from start to finish.

Assisi is located around 105 miles (170 km) from Rome, connecting a small Umbrian town with Italy’s capital. I began my journey at Assisi station and arrived at Roma Termini, the city’s main railway hub, after a journey of just over two hours in total.
Most trains on this route are operated by Trenitalia and are typically regional services. Some journeys involve a transfer, but it’s usually easy enough to manage, even if it’s your first time on the route.
Taking the train from Assisi to Rome often involves a short transfer, usually in towns like Foligno. The journey felt easy to manage from start to finish, even without being familiar with the route beforehand. Booking tickets is also simple, and you can compare different schedules and options on Omio, which makes planning the trip much more convenient.
Although the station is called Assisi, it is actually located in the nearby town of Santa Maria degli Angeli, about 3 miles (5 km) from the historic center. This is important to keep in mind when planning your journey, as you’ll need to take a bus or taxi to reach the station from Assisi itself. The station is small and easy to get around, with a much calmer feel than the bigger stations in Italy.
Trains from Assisi arrive at Roma Termini, the main railway station in the city and one of the busiest in Italy. It's large and can feel overwhelming at first, especially compared to smaller stations like Assisi. From Roma Termini, you have metro lines, buses and taxis available. It’s a convenient arrival point, especially if you’re staying in central Rome.
There are multiple daily trains connecting Assisi to Rome, from early morning until the evening. Most services are operated by regional trains, with both direct options and journeys that involve a short transfer. Travel times range from around 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on the connection.
On the train from Assisi to Rome, the carriages are simple but comfortable enough for a journey of a couple of hours. Seating is usually unreserved, so you can choose any seat when you board, but it can get a bit busy during peak times. On my trip, the train itself was clean, with enough space for my small carry-on. You don’t get the same level of service as on high-speed trains, but for a journey like this, it works just fine.
My Assisi to Rome train ticket cost €16 on Omio. Unlike high-speed services in Italy, these tickets tend to have more stable pricing, so you don’t necessarily need to book far in advance to get a good deal. If you’re traveling during busy periods, it can still be a good idea to book ahead.
