FAQS
Can I travel with my skis? Does it cost extra?
The answer to this question varies depending on how you are getting to Chamonix. Below is a breakdown of the rules depending on whether you are getting there by plane, bus, or train.
- Flying with Skis
- Taking the Bus with Skis
- Taking the Train with Skis and/or Snowboard
Generally speaking it shouldn’t be a problem traveling with your skis or snowboard to Geneva, but there are some important things to keep in mind if you plan on traveling with your own winter sports equipment.
First of all, you should always let your airline know that you are traveling with skis or a snowboard so they can add it to your booking. If you don't see an option to add “sports equipment” to your checked luggage during booking, call your airline and add it over the phone. You should do this well in advance of your journey, since room for skis and snowboard equipment may be limited on your flight. If you forget, you’ll usually have to pay a higher fee, or even worse: there may not be room for your skis on your flight!
Another thing to keep in mind is that most airlines charge a small fee for transporting winter sports equipment. One exception is SWISS airlines, which allows passengers to check a pair of skis or a snowboard free of charge, as long as it meets their weight and size restrictions. Note: this benefit doesn’t apply to Economy Light fares, so keep that in mind when booking) Since SWISS airlines run a lot of flights in and out of Geneva Airport, this can be a
super helpful tip for saving money on your Chamonix skiing adventure!
And lastly, there is no direct flight to Chamonix so your journey will require a separate bus or private shuttle booking. If you take the bus, make sure to add skis to your luggage booking for that leg of your journey too. This way you can be sure there is room for your skis on the day of travel. See below for more information about taking the bus with skis.Taking the Bus with Skis and/or Snowboard? Since winter buses to Chamonix know you are probably going there to ski, bringing winter sports equipment in the luggage hold is generally not a problem. One of the great benefits of traveling by train in Europe is the lax attitude toward luggage. For safety reasons, always make sure you put your skis or snowboard in a protective cover (along with boots and other equipment) and make sure it is properly stowed so that is not blocking any of the passageways or bothering other passengers.
