Flying from/to EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg

When arriving to EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg, it can be unclear how to reach your final destination, or more generally, to the city centre. We, at Omio, have mapped out good things to know, facilities available when flying to EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg and what to do when you get to the city.

Travel from Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg city centers to EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg

Located on the French, Swiss, German border, the EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg is probably unique in the airport world in that it serves as the main airport for three cities in three different countries: Basel in Switzerland, Freiburg in Germany and Mulhouse in France. The airport is relatively small, with around five million passengers using it each year, and provides mostly leisure flights across Europe.

What's the best way to get to the airport from the city centers

There are two main options for getting from Basel to the airport - the train or the bus. The train operates from Basel central station, arriving at Gare de Saint - Louis La Chaussée, which is about 10 minutes' walk from the airport terminal. The train runs hourly. The other option is to take the number 50 bus, also from the central Basel station. This departs around every seven to eight minutes, and takes passengers straight to the airport terminal. To travel from Freiburg to the airport, passengers can either take the FlixBus, which departs from Freiburg central station once an hour, or they can take an ICE train from Freiburg station to Basel station, where they can pick up one of the buses or trains that runs on to the airport. Getting from Mulhouse to the EuroAirport is relatively straightforward. Either, passengers can take a regional train from Gare du Mulhouse to Gare de Saint and then walk, or they can stay on the train to Basel and catch the bus.

How far is it from the city center to the airport?

Mulhouse lies about 25 miles (40 kilometers) north, northwest of EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg. If taking the regional train to the Gare de Saint, then the journey should not take more than 40 minutes. Taking the train to Basel and then getting the number 50 bus is slightly lengthier, taking just over an hour. Freiburg is the furthest away of the three cities, sitting about 40 miles (65 kilometers) to the north of the airport, and takes proportionately longer. A FlixBus takes an hour and 15 minutes, while taking the train into Basel and then getting the bus out to the airport clocks in at one and a half hours. Basel city center is only 4.6 miles (7.5 kilometers) from the EuroAirport, and getting to the airport from the central station usually takes between 30 and 40 minutes.

What facilities are there at the airport?

As it is a relatively small airport, the EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg does not have a huge amount of choice when it comes to food and drink, but there is a decent selection. Options include Starbucks, Columbus Café & Co., Fourchette Suisse (who do a good baguette) and Paul. The EuroAirport is relatively accessible for those with limited mobility. Lifts are available throughout the airport, and there is a free assistance service that can be booked in advance. It's worth noting that there is no shuttle service between the airport's car parks and the terminal, so if assistance is needed to get from one to the other passengers should contact the airport who will provide it.

How accessible is the route for those with limited mobility?

Buses from Basel to the airport are accessible. All buses on the airport route have folding ramps that can be deployed and almost all the buses can be lowered to the level of the curb for easy access. The trains from Basel station should be at platform level and therefore accessible. The same company operates the train from Mulhouse, so similar rules should apply. The FlixBus from Freiburg is not as accessible as it could be. If passengers can get from their wheelchair into the bus with the help of a companion, then wheelchairs can be stowed in the bus, but otherwise it may not be possible to use the service. ICE trains from Freiburg should be fully accessible, with either lifts or ramps available to help wheelchair users onto the train.

Local tips: how to travel to the airport like a local

Given that the Gare de Saint, where trains for EuroAirport stop, is a little walk away from the terminal building, if passengers have substantial luggage they are probably best off heading into Basel to then catch the bus out to the airport. FlixBus would do the same job from Freiburg. It's also worth knowing that no modes of transportation run through the night, with the last bus from Basel out to the airport at 12:10 a.m. and the first in the morning setting out at 4:35 a.m.
