Travel from Naples city center to Naples International Airport

Naples is Italy's third most populous city, and is one of Europe's most densely populated cities. Tourists flock to this stunning city in southern Italy for its historic city center, a dedicated UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, Naples has been a city since the Stone Age, and is surrounded by historically famous sights like Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. The city is coastal, and runs parallel to the Gulf of Naples, and the Tyrrhenian Sea beyond. Luckily for tourists in this ancient city, public transportation in Naples is modernized and extensive. The public transit system comprises bus lines, night buses, trams, subways, funicular lines, and railways. Naples International Airport, known locally as Aeroporto Internazionale di Napoli or Capodichino Airport, is a small, one-terminal airport just over three miles (4.8 kilometers) northeast of Naples city center. The best way to reach the airport is by Alibus Shuttle, a convenient, reliable staple of airport transit for locals and tourists alike.

What's the best way to get to the airport from Naples city center?

The best way to get to Naples International Airport is by Alibus Shuttle. The Alibus Shuttle is allowed to drive on a dedicated port road and this is of great benefit during Naples' congested peak hours. The bus departs Piazza Garibaldi, a central Naples station, and reaches the airport in roughly 20 minutes. The bus stops twice along the way, and drives an attractive route through the city. Piazza Garibaldi is a few minutes' walk from the city center, and is surrounded by numerous popular hotels and tourist attractions. Those who prefer or need to drive can also take the highways to the airport, but should be aware that traffic is a serious concern during peak hours in Naples. Driving takes 25 minutes without traffic.

How far is it from Naples city center to Naples Airport?

Naples International Airport is situated just over three miles (4.8 kilometers) from Naples city center. The walk to Piazza Garibaldi takes mere minutes on foot for those staying in the city center. From Piazza Garibaldi, the bus ride is roughly 20 minutes. Although this amounts to a 30-minute journey overall, it is recommended that bus travelers leave upwards of one hour to reach Naples International Airport, and that car drivers expect delays.

What facilities are there at Naples International Airport?

Naples International Airport has long and short stay parking for those driving to their flight. Shopping is a popular way to spend time in the airport, and there are luxurious Italian fashion boutiques alongside popular international stores selling fashion, books, perfume and more. Restaurants and bars serve local and international cuisine, and there are a handful of cafes for passengers hoping to get in one last Italian coffee on their vacation.

How accessible is the route for those with limited mobility?

Naples city center is not very accessible for travelers in wheelchairs. For those with limited mobility, however, the Alibus Shuttle is accessible and the airport has great services in place to make travel as easy as possible for everyone. Be sure to request assistance 48 hours in advance. Terminal entrances have help buttons for those arriving by bus who need speedy assistance, but car drivers can also alert the airport via the intercom in the parking lot entrances. Airport staff help with luggage, check-in, showing passengers around the airport including the dedicated waiting space, and boarding the plane. There are disabled restrooms and all amenities are accessible.

Local tips: how to travel to Naples International Airport like a local

Naples locals avoid the traffic when they can and take advantage of the Alibus Shuttles to bypass traffic on dedicated port roads. Piazza Garibaldi is located very centrally, and when they can, locals leave themselves a little extra time to take in some of the beautiful sights surrounding the station before they take their bus. A few minutes away there is Basilica della Santissima Annunziata Maggiore, a stunning church rebuilt in 1774, with homage to various eras of architecture. Five or ten minutes away from the station there is the Santa Maria Egiziaca a Forcella, a Catholic church founded in 1342, in Baroque style architecture.
