As the distance between Basel and Zurich in Switzerland is less than 90 kilometers, traveling between the two cities by plane is not a practical or cost-effective option. Switzerland has a transport system which prevents trains and buses duplicating the same routes, so making the journey by train is the only possible method other than driving.
Return trips from Zurich to Basel are also available.
Direct trains from the city of Basel to Zurich start at just after 4:30 a.m. and continue until the early hours of the morning. These InterRegional trains take around one hour to make the journey. There are up to six departures an hour throughout the day, with more trains leaving during the evening peak hours of around 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. Trains from Basel depart from Basel SBB Station which is located just to the south of the city center. The station lies on both tram and bus routes which link it into the city's efficient transport network, which is supplemented by ferry boats on the Rhine and public taxis. Trains terminate at the busy concourse of Zurich Hauptbahnhof right in the heart of the historic Old Town. Tourist attractions are within walking distance and the station is linked to Zurich's extensive network of yellow Swiss PostAuto buses, suburban buses, trams, cable cars and lake ferries. The ticketing system on Zurich's public transport network is fully integrated making travel very tourist friendly. Night bus routes operate on Friday and Saturday evenings while car rentals and taxis are available at Zurich train station.
