Spain is one of those countries where train travel feels just right, and when it came time to head south from Barcelona to Seville, I knew I wanted to take the scenic route. I’d heard great things about the high-speed train, and after spending the day gliding through the heart of Spain, I can confirm that traveling from Barcelona to Seville by train is as smooth and scenic as it sounds.

The Barcelona to Seville train is a long-distance, high-speed route operated by Renfe AVE, connecting the Catalan capital with Andalusia’s cultural gem in roughly 5 hours and 30 minutes. If you’re wondering about the best way to get from Barcelona to Seville, I’d argue that the train is the perfect balance of comfort, convenience, and experience. While flights can be quicker on paper, the AVE lets you skip airport lines, avoid baggage fees, and soak up the Spanish countryside in style. You can also compare flights from Barcelona to Seville on Omio, but for me, this train ride felt like part of the adventure, not just a transfer.
I booked my Barcelona to Seville AVE train ticket about a week in advance via the Omio app. The process was easy, and I liked that I could store my ticket digitally (no printing = less stress). I chose 2nd class, which offered more than enough comfort for the 5-hour ride. If you’re deciding whether to fly or take the train from Barcelona to Seville, here’s what tipped the scales for me: arriving just 30 minutes before departure instead of two hours early, not stressing over luggage limits, and watching Spain transform outside my window, from cityscapes to farmland to sun-drenched hills.

The train departs from Barcelona Sants, a central and well-connected station just a few metro stops from most major neighborhoods. It’s modern, features numerous cafés, and offers a quick check-in process. Simply scan your ticket and proceed through a brief security screening.
We arrived at Sevilla Santa Justa, the city’s main station, about a 5–10 minute taxi or bus ride from the historic center. It’s clean, easy to get around, and has taxis waiting right outside.
Renfe runs several AVE trains from Barcelona to Seville daily, starting in the early morning and continuing into the afternoon. I took the 8:30 AM departure, which got me to Seville around 2 PM. This was perfect timing to drop off my bags and still have a full afternoon to explore.
I traveled in 2nd class, and the AVE did not disappoint. Seats were spacious, with generous legroom, tray tables, and power outlets at every seat. The carriage was quiet, clean, and air-conditioned, something I definitely appreciated after the warm Barcelona morning. There’s Wi-Fi onboard, and while it wasn’t strong enough to stream, it worked well enough for emails, social media, and a quick podcast download. Renfe's baggage policy allows for up to three pieces of luggage with a maximum combined weight of 25 kg. I brought a suitcase and a backpack with me without any issues (storage is available both overhead and near the doors). A food trolley came through mid-ride, offering coffee, drinks, and snacks. I brought my own fruit and pastries from a bakery near where I was staying and had my own water in hand. And yes, the views were worth staying awake for. The route takes you through parts of Castilla-La Mancha and northern Andalusia. With olive groves, vineyards, and tiny villages along the way, it’s a quiet kind of beautiful.
I paid €62 for my 2nd-class ticket, booked a week in advance. Prices vary depending on when you book and the time of day you travel. Booking early usually gets you better fares, and Renfe sometimes offers Promo+ or flexible ticket options with extras like cancellations or seat changes. Estimated budget:
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €62 |
| Food & drinks | €5 |
| Travel to departure station | €2.40 |
| Travel from arrival station | €8 |
| Total | € 77.4 |
