The Rome to Turin train connects Italy’s capital with its Alpine city. High-speed trains ply this route, connecting Italy’s major cities and terminating in Turin. I took this journey when I was going skiing after spending some time in Southern Italy. Here’s everything you need to know about it!

Departures board at Roma Termini
There’s a distance of 405 miles (653 km) between Rome and Turin, and the journey can take as little as 4 hours and 30 minutes. Italo and Frecciarossa serve the route. For this journey, I chose Frecciarossa because it departed at the ideal time for me. These trains usually run on time, and from a window seat you can see the landscape slowly transform from the Mediterranean climate of central Italy to the mountainous landscapes of the north.
I booked my tickets 6 weeks in advance for this train, as I wanted to secure the lowest possible rates. I used the Omio app, which meant that tickets were saved on my phone. They were easy to access throughout my journey.
Roma Termini Station is the main station of the capital. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes, and there’s even a supermarket here. I visited to stock up on snacks and supplies before my trip. I also made use of the left luggage facility in Roma Termini, as I’d checked out of my Airbnb and my flight wasn’t until the afternoon. This cost me €6. I walked to Roma Termini, as I was staying nearby, but it’s also on the red and blue metro lines.
Torino Porta Nuova station sits to the southwest of the city. It’s a 15-minute walk up Via Giuseppe Luigi Lagrange to reach the city center. Taxis are readily available and will take around 7 minutes. Porta Nuova is one of the busiest stations in Italy and has 20 platforms, along with plenty of places to eat and drink.
There are around 35 trains per day between Rome and Turin, most of them high-speed, taking as little as 4 hours and 30 minutes. The first train departs at 5:40 am, and the last high-speed train departs just after 7 pm, arriving in Turin at around 11:30 pm. I took a train at 12:10 pm that arrived in Turin at 5:05 pm. Intercity Notte trains also connect the two cities, with a train departing Rome shortly after midnight and arriving in Turin around 10:45 am the following morning.
My Frecciarossa high-speed train was modern and comfortable. I had an allocated seat next to the window, which I’d selected so I could enjoy the view. There was a lot of luggage storage, as many people use these trains for holidays or travel. The toilets were kept clean, and the Wi-Fi worked intermittently. I also used the plug outlet to charge my phone and laptop. There was a bistro carriage serving meals and snacks, although I’d bought my food in Roma Termini station.
I paid €75 for my train journey. Prices can rise to up to €100 just before departure, so I’d recommend booking at least a week in advance if possible.

Taking the train from Rome to Turin is a quick and affordable way to travel from central to northern Italy. From my window seat on the Frecciarossa, I was able to enjoy watching the landscape transform into beautiful mountainous scenery. Book your ticket with Omio in advance to lock in the best fare.
