With less than 32 miles (50 km) between them, it's easy to travel between Naples and Sorrento by train when you're visiting Southern Italy. Campania Express trains are designed specifically for tourists, and offer a faster and more comfortable alternative to the standard Circumvesuviana trains. Find out how to book and what to expect on board in this guide.

Route overview

The Campania Express runs from Naples to Sorrento, with great views of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. The journey takes around 1 hour and 10 minutes, and passes through famous sights like Ercolano (Herculaneum) and Pompei along the way.

These special tourist services are a comfortable and easy way to travel. They make fewer stops than regular commuter trains and have guaranteed seating and air conditioning. Ferries and hydrofoils from Naples to Sorrento are also available, but these often get canceled in bad weather.

Transportation experience

I booked my Naples to Sorrento train tickets two weeks in advance using the Omio app. It was easy to see the different services and fares available. After choosing a late morning service and paying online, my tickets appeared in the app, ready to use, and were also sent via email.

Departure station

The Campania Express departs from Napoli Porta Nolana station, but I got on board at its second stop, Napoli Piazza Garibaldi, a few minutes' walk away. This is located right underneath Napoli Centrale, the city’s main railway hub. So it's a useful option if you're connecting from other destinations around Italy. Centrale is also a bigger station with more cafés, shops and facilities.

Arrival station

The Campania Express terminates at Sorrento train station, which is just a short walk from Piazza Tasso, the town's main square. Here, you can sit and watch the world go by with a drink, just a few minutes after arriving. Otherwise, it's only a 15-minute walk (down a fairly steep hill) to the port for ferries to Capri and the Amalfi Coast. The train also makes a stop in Sant'Agnello, which can be useful if you're staying in the east of Sorrento.

Schedule & frequency

Campania Express trains from Naples to Sorrento normally have four departures each day, around 8:22 am, 11:22 am, 2:22 pm and 5:22 pm. The journey takes 1 hour and 10 minutes, so you could easily visit Sorrento on a day trip from Naples.

Onboard experience & services

Campania Express trains are a more comfortable option compared to the standard Circumvesuviana local trains, which can get very crowded. They have reserved seating and designated luggage space available. The carriages also have air-conditioning, which was very useful in the mid-July heat of my visit.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

Booking in advance is recommended to secure a seat reservation, especially during peak travel months. I paid €16 for a one-way ticket on the 11:22 am departure from Naples. The journey flew by while I watched the views out over the window as we traveled past Vesuvius and along the coast.

Top tips & recommendations

  • Sit on the right-hand side of the train for the best views.
  • Arrive early at the station, as you'll have a long wait if you miss your train.
  • Bring snacks or drinks with you since there's no buffet car.
  • Use the bathroom before you leave because there isn't one on board.

Conclusion

Traveling from Naples to Sorrento by train is the best way to combine these two fascinating destinations, whether you're visiting on a day trip or staying for longer to explore the Amalfi Coast. Omio makes ticket-buying simple, which means you can just enjoy the trip.

My journey from Naples to Sorrento was very good as firstly the price was very pleasing. It was pretty good for the long distance. Also, the staff was very friendly, polite and nice. They always respected their guests and tried their best to resolve their concerns. Also, the wifi was efficient. I was able to make calls and be entertained. The seats were also very comfortable and cosy, which made my journey much easier. However, the train did not arrive on time in Sorrento and there was minimal attention paid to hygiene, as the toilets were very unkempt. I also had to change trains several times, which made the journey more difficult as I always had to go back and forth with my suitcase. But overall the journey was surprisingly good.

Although it was a fairly short journey, there were things that I found very positive, but also a few negative ones. First of all, the train was on time and, as I said, the journey was very short, but unfortunately the journey wasn't organised properly, so there were too many passengers and I didn't have a seat. Fortunately, the journey was short, but still extremely annoying. I still thought the price was quite fair and reasonable.
