Taking the train from Milan to Zurich is one of my favorite cross-border trips; it turns a simple transit into a cinematic experience. I love how I can start my morning with a last minute espresso at Stazione Centrale and be walking along the Limmat river by lunchtime, all without the stress of mountain driving or airport security lines! Whether you're heading to Switzerland’s financial hub for business or looking for an Alpine getaway (the last time I went to Zurich for a concert), this rail connection is seamless. Let me walk you through my personal experience on this route and share some insider tips to make your journey from Milan to Zurich as smooth as possible.

The rail journey from Milan to Zurich covers approximately 218 kilometers (135 miles) and goes through the Gotthard Base Tunnel - the longest railway tunnel in the world. On a direct high-speed EuroCity train the trip takes about 3 hours and 17 minutes. In my experience, the direct EuroCity (EC) trains operated by Trenitalia and SBB (Swiss Railways) are the gold standard for this route. You can certainly find trains with connections along the way, but I highly recommend you book a direct train to really enjoy the panoramic views of the Alps knowing that it will take little time to reach your destination.
I used Omio to book my tickets, which allowed me to compare the different departure times and see exactly which trains were direct. Choosing the train over a flight for this route is a no-brainer for me: by the time you travel to Malpensa, clear security, and fly, you could have already arrived in downtown Zurich. Plus, the environmental impact is significantly lower. Driving is an option, but dealing with Swiss motorway vignettes and expensive parking in Zurich can be a headache (also, I don’t like driving at all!). On the train you can simply sit back and watch the beautiful Alpine landscapes.
My journey began at Milano Centrale, one of Europe's most beautiful stations. I suggest arriving at least 25-30 minutes before your departure. This gives you enough time to navigate the platforms (which are behind security gates) and perhaps grab a fresh pastry and a coffee for the road (snacks on the train are more expensive). The station digital boards are very clear: just look for the "Zuerich HB" destination and its platform.
You’ll arrive at Zurich Hauptbahnhof (also known as Zürich HB), the largest station in Switzerland. It’s a ultra-modern facility located right at the end of Bahnhofstrasse, the city's famous shopping street. What I appreciate most about arriving here is the efficiency; the moment you step off the train, you are connected to an incredible network of trams and local S-Bahn trains. If your hotel is in the Altstadt (Old Town) like mine was, it’s likely just a short, pleasant walk or a 5-minute tram ride away.
The frequency on this route is great, with direct trains departing about once an hour throughout the day. Opt for a mid-morning departure if you want to catch the best light over Lake Como and the Swiss lakes! There are also early morning options if you have a full day of meetings or late afternoon departures if you want to squeeze in one last Italian aperitivo before heading north.
Traveling on the EuroCity is a delight. I found the carriages to be incredibly quiet and well-maintained. Even in Second Class, the seats are ergonomic with plenty of legroom and large windows (ideal for sightseeing!). Most of the trains feature a dining car (Bistro), where you can grab a snack or a drink while crossing the border. There are power sockets at every seat, which was perfect for keeping my camera and phone charged while I snapped photos of the mountains.
Switzerland can be pricey, so my biggest tip is to book as early as possible. "Mini" or "Smart" fares are often available on Omio if you book a few weeks out, significantly reducing the cost compared to buying a ticket on the day of travel. Remember that you are crossing a border, so keep your passport or ID handy, although checks are infrequent.
