Traveling by train from Milan to Zurich is one of the most scenic ways to cross from Italy into Switzerland. The journey is comfortable and takes just a few hours. I’ve recently taken this route, and it stands out for the contrast between the Italian lakes and the Swiss Alps along the way.

Route overview

The train journey from Milan to Zurich covers around 174 miles (280 km) and is typically operated by EuroCity trains. A direct trip takes approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Shortly after departing from Milano Centrale, the train passes near Lake Como and continues toward Lugano. The route then crosses into Switzerland and enters the Gotthard Base Tunnel, one of the longest railway tunnels in the world.

After emerging on the northern side, the landscape changes noticeably, with alpine valleys and glimpses of Lake Lucerne before continuing toward Zurich.

Transportation experience

I booked my ticket in advance on Omio and received a digital ticket with a reserved seat. Everything was clearly organized, from departure time to platform information. Since this is a direct EuroCity train, there’s no need to worry about connections, which makes the journey much easier to plan.

Departure station

Trains depart from Milano Centrale, one of the most impressive train stations in Europe. The building stands out for its grand architecture, with high ceilings that immediately catch the eye. It’s easy to navigate despite its size, but it’s worth arriving a bit early, not only to find your train comfortably, but also to take some time to admire the building.

Arrival station

Trains from Milan arrive at Zurich HB, the city’s main train station. Despite its size, it’s easy to find your way around, whether you’re connecting to another train or heading into the city center. The station is centrally located, with trams, buses and shops available, making it a very convenient arrival point.

Schedule & frequency

Trains run from around 7:10 am to 8:10 pm, with departures approximately every hour. Most services are direct and take just over 3 hours to reach Zurich HB. My train departed at 9:10 am and arrived shortly after noon.

Onboard experience & services

EuroCity trains are comfortable and well-equipped, with air conditioning and spacious seats. Each seat has a power outlet, and there is space for luggage both overhead and at the end of the carriage.

Free Wi-Fi is available through the SBB portal, and there is also a restaurant car offering meals, snacks and drinks, along with a minibar service that passes through the train.

Ticketing advice & budget breakdown

I booked my Milan to Zurich train ticket in advance and paid around €88 for a one-way trip. Prices on this route can vary depending on how early you book and the type of seat selected. Booking ahead is recommended, especially during peak travel periods, to secure better availability and preferred departure times.

  • Even though the journey is direct, it’s still a good idea to double-check your platform before boarding.

Conclusion

Traveling from Milan to Zurich by train is a comfortable and efficient way to travel between Italy and Switzerland. With direct services, a relatively short travel time and scenic sections along the way, it’s a route that combines practicality with a memorable journey.
