I recently took Renfe’s AVE train from Madrid to Vigo to visit Galicia for the first time. This direct high-speed connection from Madrid Chamartín to Vigo Urzáiz offers a seamless way to reach Spain’s green northwest. Along the way, the train crosses ever-changing landscapes, from the golden plains of Castile to the lush, mountainous scenery of Galicia. Traveling in First Class made it all the more relaxing, with large seats, Wi-Fi, and the PlayRENFE entertainment system keeping the trip pleasant from start to finish.

Renfe AVE Madrid to Vigo train in Chamartín
The Madrid–Vigo train line is one of Spain’s most scenic long-distance routes, covering 645 km in around 4 hours. The route crosses three autonomous communities (Madrid, Castile and León, and Galicia) and uses a mix of high-speed and conventional rail lines. Although this is one of the longer AVE journeys, it’s among the most diverse in scenery. The route combines modern rail engineering with stunning views of mountains, valleys, and forested landscapes along the way.
I booked my First Class AVE ticket about a month in advance. After paying online, the mobile ticket was available in the Omio app almost instantly. Madrid Chamartín Station is Renfe’s main departure point for northwestern routes, and First Class passengers can access the Renfe Sala Club lounge before boarding. Boarding involved a brief security and ticket check, which was smooth and punctual. Once on board, the AVE’s modern design immediately gave that familiar sense of speed and comfort that Renfe is known for.

Renfe AVE Madrid to Vigo train in Chamartín
Madrid Chamartín Station connects easily to Metro lines 1 and 10, suburban trains, and buses, making it simple to reach from anywhere in the city. Facilities include a choice of cafés and shops, but I decided to relax in the Renfe Sala Club lounge, which offered Wi-Fi, comfortable seating, and refreshments such as soft drinks, coffee, tea, and light snacks like biscuits and pastries.

Facilities include a choice of cafés and shops, but I decided to relax in the Renfe Sala Club lounge, which offered Wi-Fi, comfortable seating, and refreshments such as soft drinks, coffee, tea, and light snacks like biscuits and pastries. Vigo Urzáiz Station is located near the city center and close to the port area, with taxis and local buses available right outside. The station sits within a modern shopping complex, making it convenient for last-minute shopping or refreshments after arrival. My arrival point served as a practical gateway to explore Galicia’s Atlantic coast.
Renfe AVE currently operates three times daily between Madrid and Vigo. Trains depart early and late morning and then mid-afternoon, taking around 4 hours to reach Vigo. I took the late morning departure so I could enjoy daylight views through Galicia, use the Sala Club lounge beforehand, and still arrive in Vigo early afternoon for hotel check-in. Timetables can shift for this route, so check Omio to pick the time that fits your day.
The First Class AVE cabin had spacious reclining seats arranged 2+1 across the aisle, each with individual entertainment screens showing films, music, and a live route map. Wi-Fi through the PlayRENFE app worked reliably for most of the journey, offering a range of series, documentaries, and newspapers. A highlight of the trip was the modern bar car, redesigned with both self-service and attended options, allowing passengers to select items freely and pay at the counter. I bought a coffee to enjoy there (and water to bring back to my seat) and a light salad to tide me over until dinner. It’s cozy, modern, and a nice way to stretch your legs mid-journey. The train also had restrooms located at the end of each coach. On AVE trains from Madrid to Vigo, you can bring up to three bags, equaling no more than 25 kg combined. Like most trains, there were racks at the ends of the carriage, as well as under-seat and overhead compartments. Views along the route are remarkable, from the sunny Castilian plains to the lush Galician mountains, offering a real sense of traveling across regions and climates in just hours. As a matter of fact, the day I traveled, I departed Madrid Chamartin with over 35ºC and arrived in Vigo Urzaiz with around 20ºC!
I booked my ticket on Omio about a month in advance and found an excellent fare for First Class. Renfe’s AVE fares vary depending on demand and departure time, so booking early usually offers the best prices. I thought this was great value for the comfort and service included on the four-hour journey.
