Information about the Hiroshima to Kyoto train route

The Hiroshima to Kyoto shinkansen is one of the most popular and scenic rail journeys in Japan, connecting two of the country's most historically significant cities. Hiroshima Station, located at 2-37 Matsubaracho, Minami Ward, Hiroshima 732-0822, serves as the departure point for this route, while Kyoto Station at Higashishiokoji Kamadonocho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto 600-8216 is where your journey ends — right in the heart of one of Japan's most beloved cultural destinations.

The fastest and most convenient way to travel between Hiroshima and Kyoto is aboard the Nozomi shinkansen, operated by JR West and JR Central. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes on the Nozomi, making it an efficient alternative to flying or long-distance bus travel. If you opt for the Hikari shinkansen, the trip takes around 1 hour and 40 minutes, with a few additional stops along the way. Note that the Nozomi is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass, so pass holders will need to book the Hikari or Kodama services instead.

Best time of year to travel

The route is popular year-round, but the best times to visit both Hiroshima and Kyoto are during spring (late March to early May) for cherry blossom season and autumn (mid-October to late November) for the stunning red and golden foliage. These are also the busiest periods, so advance booking of reserved seats is strongly recommended, particularly during Golden Week (late April to early May) and the Obon festival period in mid-August.

We recommend using the JR Pass for traveling in trains all around Japan to save more money if you pretend to do many trips. You can check the correct prices for every station or shinkansen connection in Omio's JR Pass information.

Hiroshima to Kyoto by train: what to expect on board

Traveling on the Hiroshima to Kyoto shinkansen is a smooth, punctual and comfortable experience that reflects the best of Japan's world-renowned rail network. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a returning traveler, the shinkansen offers a standard of service that is hard to match anywhere in the world.

Seating and carriages

Shinkansen trains on this route are typically N700 or N700S series trains, featuring three classes of travel: Ordinary (standard class), Green Car (business class) and Gran Class (first class). Ordinary seats are spacious by international standards, with generous legroom, reclining seats and tray tables. Green Car seats are wider, with more recline and additional amenities, while Gran Class offers a premium experience comparable to business class on a long-haul flight, including meal service and exclusive cabin access.

Best seats to book

For the Hiroshima to Kyoto shinkansen, seat selection can significantly enhance your experience. If you want views of Mount Fuji (on a clear day, visible in the Shizuoka area between Shin-Fuji and Shin-Yokohama stations), note that this section is east of Nagoya and not visible on the Hiroshima–Kyoto leg. For Fuji views, extend your journey toward Tokyo on the Tokaido Shinkansen and sit on the right-hand side (D or E seats) heading eastbound. However, since this particular leg of the route travels through western Japan, the most scenic highlight to watch for is the landscape around the Seto Inland Sea region, best seen from the right-hand side of the train departing Hiroshima. Seats in carriages 3 to 5 tend to be quieter and closer to the exits, which is ideal if you are traveling with luggage.

Luggage and onboard facilities

Large luggage (suitcases exceeding 160 cm in total dimensions) must be stored in designated overhead compartments or in reserved luggage spaces found at the rear of certain carriages — make sure to reserve a seat adjacent to these spaces when booking. The onboard facilities include clean Western-style toilets, a drinks vending machine and, on some services, a trolley cart selling bento boxes, snacks and beverages. It is also a great idea to pick up an ekiben (station bento box) at Hiroshima Station before boarding — a beloved Japanese travel ritual.

Practical tips for the journey

  • Arrive at the platform at least 5 to 10 minutes before departure, as shinkansen doors close precisely on time.
  • IC cards such as Suica or ICOCA are not valid for shinkansen travel; ensure you have a ticket or valid rail pass.
  • Free Wi-Fi is available on N700S series trains throughout the journey.
  • Mobile phone use in a loud voice is discouraged; use the space between carriages for calls.
  • The journey is short enough that there is no need to pack extensively for the ride, but having a window seat booked in advance will make the experience far more enjoyable.

Getting to Kyoto and beyond

Kyoto Station is one of Japan's largest and most well-connected transport hubs, making onward travel from your arrival point straightforward and efficient. Upon arriving at Kyoto Station, you will find direct access to an extensive network of buses, subway lines, taxis and local trains that reach virtually every major attraction in the city.

From Kyoto Station to the city center

The Karasuma Subway Line departs from directly beneath Kyoto Station and connects to central areas such as Shijo (for Gion and the Nishiki Market area) in just two stops. The city's extensive bus network, including the Kyoto City Bus, covers routes to destinations such as Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari, all accessible with a single flat-fare day pass. A one-day Kyoto City Bus pass costs around ¥700 and is highly recommended for tourists planning to visit multiple sites.

Day trips and regional connections from Kyoto

Kyoto is exceptionally well-positioned for day trips to neighboring cities. Nara is only 45 minutes away by the Kintetsu Nara Line or JR Nara Line, while Osaka is reachable in just 15 minutes on the Shinkansen or 30 minutes on the Hankyu or Keihan railway lines. For those continuing their journey westward, Hiroshima is of course easily accessible on the return shinkansen route, and Kobe can be reached in under an hour. Travelers heading north can also access Amanohashidate or the historic town of Obama by local and limited express trains from Kyoto Station.

What to expect when you arrive in Kyoto

Arriving at Kyoto Station is an experience in itself. The station building is a striking piece of modern architecture — a vast steel and glass structure opened in 1997, designed by architect Hiroshi Hara. Despite its modern appearance, it sits at the threshold of a city that is home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, over 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines and centuries of imperial history.

Navigating Kyoto Station

The station is large but well-signposted in English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. The Shinkansen platforms are located on the upper levels, with exits via the Central Gate leading directly to the Kyoto Tower and the main bus terminal. The underground concourse connects to the Karasuma Subway Line and features an extensive shopping and dining area, including the Porta underground shopping mall. Luggage storage facilities (coin lockers) are available throughout the station in varying sizes, which is particularly useful if you want to explore the city before checking into your accommodation.
