Information about the Kanazawa to Kyoto train route

Traveling from Kanazawa to Kyoto by train is one of the most rewarding rail journeys in central Japan, connecting two of the country's most culturally rich cities. The route is served by the Thunderbird limited express train, operated by JR West, and runs through the scenic Japan Sea coast and into the heart of the Kansai region. With the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Tsuruga in March 2024, travelers now have an updated routing option: take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Kanazawa to Tsuruga, then transfer to the Thunderbird limited express directly to Kyoto Station. The total journey time is approximately 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes, depending on the service and transfer time at Tsuruga.

Kanazawa Station (金沢駅), located at 1-1 Kinoshinbocho, Kanazawa, Ishikawa, is a major transport hub on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line and is widely regarded as one of Japan's most architecturally striking stations, with its iconic Tsuzumi-mon (Drum Gate) welcoming visitors at the entrance. Kyoto Station (京都駅), located at Higashishiokoji Kamadonocho, Shimogyo Ward, is one of Japan's largest and busiest stations, providing direct access to Kyoto's extensive subway and bus network.

Best time of year to travel from Kanazawa to Kyoto

  • Spring (late March–early May): Cherry blossom season transforms both Kanazawa's Kenroku-en Garden and Kyoto's temple grounds into breathtaking scenery. Book your train tickets well in advance as this is peak travel season.
  • Autumn (mid-October–late November): Autumn foliage (koyo) is spectacular along this corridor. Both cities are at their most colorful, and the demand for train seats is extremely high.
  • Winter (December–February): A quieter, more affordable time to travel. Kanazawa receives heavy snowfall, and the landscape between the two cities can be beautifully wintry. Some services may be affected by weather delays.
  • Summer (June–August): Humid but vibrant, with festivals in both cities. The Hyakumangoku Matsuri in Kanazawa (early June) and Kyoto's Gion Matsuri (July) make this a culturally rich time to travel.

We recommend using the JR Pass for traveling in trains all around Japan to save more money if you pretend to do many trips. You can check the correct prices for every station or shinkansen connection in Omio's JR Pass information.

Kanazawa to Kyoto by train: what to expect on board

The Kanazawa to Kyoto journey involves two distinct train experiences, both operated by JR West and offering a high standard of comfort.

Hokuriku Shinkansen (Kanazawa to Tsuruga)

The first leg of the journey on the Hokuriku Shinkansen is a smooth, modern ride lasting approximately 30–50 minutes. Shinkansen carriages are clean, air-conditioned, and equipped with reclining seats, overhead storage, and power outlets on newer rolling stock. The trains run punctually, so keep an eye on the departure boards at Kanazawa Station and head to your designated platform early. Luggage storage areas are available at the ends of each carriage, and there is a small onboard trolley service on some services.

Best seats on the Hokuriku Shinkansen: For scenic views as you depart Kanazawa, try to secure window seats on the left side (A seats) when heading towards Tsuruga to catch glimpses of the Noto Peninsula coastline and the Ishikawa countryside.

Thunderbird Limited Express (Tsuruga to Kyoto)

The Thunderbird is a well-loved limited express service with a comfortable, reserved seating arrangement. Journey time from Tsuruga to Kyoto is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Seats are arranged in a 2+2 layout with generous legroom, and the carriage interiors are well-maintained. The Thunderbird passes through the Lake Biwa (Biwako) region, and on clear days, you will be treated to views of Japan's largest lake stretching out alongside the tracks.

Best seats on the Thunderbird: To enjoy views of Lake Biwa, take a window seat on the right side (D or C seats) when traveling south from Tsuruga towards Kyoto. The lake appears for a prolonged stretch and is particularly beautiful in early morning light.

Practical tips for the journey

  • Transfer at Tsuruga: Allow yourself sufficient time during the transfer. Platform information is clearly displayed in Japanese and English, and station staff are generally available to assist.
  • Seat reservations: Reservations are strongly recommended during peak seasons and holidays. You can reserve seats at any JR ticket office (Midori-no-madoguchi), via JR West's online booking system, or through authorized travel agents before your trip.
  • Ekiben (station bento boxes): Kanazawa Station has an excellent selection of ekiben, reflecting the city's reputation for outstanding seafood. Pick up a kani (crab) bento or a Kanazawa-style sushi bento before boarding — it is one of the finest train meal experiences in Japan.
  • IC Cards: If you hold a Suica or ICOCA card, note that these are not valid for reserved-seat limited express travel. Ensure you have the correct tickets or pass documentation before boarding.

Getting to Kyoto and beyond

Kyoto Station is the main gateway into the city and serves as a central hub for onward travel across the Kansai region and beyond.

From Kyoto Station, you can easily reach:

  • Osaka: Take the JR Biwako/Kyoto Line for a journey of approximately 15–30 minutes (¥580 JPY by single ticket, covered by JR Pass). Alternatively, the Hankyu or Keihan private railways offer frequent, affordable services.
  • Nara: The JR Nara Line connects Kyoto to Nara in approximately 45 minutes on the Miyakoji Rapid service (covered by JR Pass).
  • Hiroshima: Board the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen from Kyoto Station for a journey of approximately 1 hour 40 minutes to Hiroshima (covered by JR Pass).
  • Tokyo: The Tokaido Shinkansen Nozomi or Hikari connects Kyoto to Tokyo in approximately 2 hours 15 minutes (Hikari covered by JR Pass; Nozomi requires an additional ticket or is included in the JR Pass Green upgrade).
  • Arashiyama: Take the San-in Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama Station in approximately 15 minutes, giving you direct access to the bamboo groves and Tenryu-ji Temple.
  • Fushimi Inari: The JR Nara Line stops at Inari Station, just a 5-minute ride from Kyoto Station, placing you directly at the base of the iconic torii gate pathway.

Getting around Kyoto

Kyoto's city bus network is one of the most comprehensive ways to navigate the city's major sightseeing districts, with a one-day bus pass (¥700 JPY) offering unlimited rides. The Kyoto Municipal Subway (Karasuma and Tozai lines) provides quick access to central and eastern areas of the city. For exploring areas such as Arashiyama or northern Kyoto (Kinkaku-ji), taxis and bicycle rental are also popular and practical options.

What to expect when you arrive in Kyoto

Arriving at Kyoto Station is an experience in itself. The station building, designed by architect Hiroshi Hara and opened in 1997, is a striking piece of contemporary architecture featuring a vast glass atrium, multiple shopping floors, a rooftop sky garden, and direct access to a major department store. Despite its scale, the station is well-organized with clear English-language signage throughout.

Practical arrival information

  • Tourist Information: The Kyoto Tourist Information Center is located on the second floor of the station building (Karasuma Central Exit side) and provides free maps, transport guides, and multilingual assistance.

First impressions and orientation

Kyoto is a city where ancient temple districts sit alongside modern shopping streets, and the contrast is part of its enduring appeal. From the station, Nishiki Market (Kyoto's famous covered food market) is approximately 15 minutes by bus or subway. The Gion district, the historic geisha quarter, is easily reached via the Keihan Line from Tofukuji Station (one stop from Kyoto on the JR Nara Line) or by bus from the station.

Tips for first-time visitors to Kyoto

  • Book accommodation early: Kyoto is one of Japan's most visited cities, and quality accommodation in central areas fills up rapidly, particularly during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons.
  • Start early: The most popular sights — Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Kinkaku-ji — are significantly less crowded before 8:00 AM. An early train from Kanazawa will serve you well here.
  • Respect local customs: Kyoto has introduced restrictions on photography and access in certain geisha districts (particularly Gion Hanamikoji Street). Observe posted signs and be considerate of residents.
  • Consider a multi-day stay: Kyoto rewards slow travel. With over 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines, and 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a minimum of two to three full days is recommended to experience the city meaningfully.
