The most efficient way to travel between the two cities is by taking the Tokaido Shinkansen, boarding at Shin-Yokohama Station, a short ride from central Yokohama, and riding directly to Kyoto. Shin-Yokohama is well connected to Yokohama Station via the JR Yokohama Line and the Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line, making the transfer straightforward even with luggage. For travelers already familiar with the Tokyo to Kyoto shinkansen corridor, the Yokohama to Kyoto bullet train follows the same high-speed line heading southwest, passing through Nagoya before arriving at Kyoto.
The Hikari service on this route is the recommended choice for most travelers using a JR Pass, as the faster Nozomi is not covered. The Hikari offers a smooth, reliable journey with a manageable number of stops along the way.

Getting to Shin-Yokohama
Since the Tokaido Shinkansen does not stop at Yokohama Station itself, the key first step is reaching Shin-Yokohama Station. From Yokohama Station, the JR Yokohama Line connects the two in around 10 minutes. The Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line is another reliable option. Allow extra time at Shin-Yokohama to navigate the Shinkansen platforms and validate or exchange your JR Pass if you have not already done so.
