After spending time in beautiful Córdoba, I continued my trip north to Ciudad Real on Renfe’s AVE train, Spain’s flagship high-speed service. The route connects the two in comfort and style. Traveling in First Class made the experience even smoother, with spacious seating and a hot, fresh cup of coffee. It was the ideal way to unwind after a busy few days exploring southern Spain. If you plan to take the Córdoba to Ciudad Real train, here's what you can expect along the way.
The Renfe AVE train from Córdoba to Ciudad Real covers around 190 km in roughly 1 hour. The route follows one of Spain’s most important high-speed corridors, seamlessly linking Andalusia to Madrid. Departing from Córdoba, the AVE crosses the plains of northern Andalusia before reaching the plains of Castilla-La Mancha. The views of Spain’s varied geography were incredible, from sun-drenched olive groves to wide open fields and distant mountain silhouettes. For comfort, speed and stunning scenery, Renfe's AVE train is the best way to travel from Córdoba to Ciudad Real.
I booked my First Class AVE ticket about a month in advance, and the process was quick and easy as always with Omio. After payment, I received my mobile ticket with a QR code that could be scanned directly from my phone. I chose the train instead of the bus from Córdoba to Ciudad Real because the rail connection is much faster and far more comfortable. Buses can take anywhere from 3.5 to 4.5 hours, which didn't sound enticing to me. A flight wouldn’t make sense for such a short distance, so the AVE was the obvious choice. Being able to stretch and grab a coffee is what makes train travel so enjoyable.
Renfe AVE trains to Ciudad Real depart from Córdoba station. This busy transport hub is centrally located and within walking distance of the city's main attractions. Urban buses and taxis stop right outside the terminal for easy access. Inside, you’ll find cafés, kiosks and a few small eateries for a quick snack before departure. Boarding is well organized, with Renfe’s standard ticket and security checks before reaching the platform.
Trains from Córdoba arrive at Ciudad Real station, which is modern, clean and located just a short distance from the city center. Local buses and taxis are available right outside. If you’re hungry after the trip, there are several good restaurants nearby. For authentic Spanish tapas, Restaurante La Casuca is a popular choice. There's also Hamburguesería Cronicass, which serves American-style burgers. Both are just a short taxi ride from the station in central Ciudad Real.
Renfe operates frequent AVE and Avlo trains between Córdoba and Ciudad Real, with around 15 departures per day. Services run from early morning at about 6 AM until late evening around 10 PM. It’s worth checking Omio for the latest schedules and fares, as timetables can change. Even so, you usually won't be waiting more than an hour for the next train. For this trip, I took the 9 AM AVE departure and arrived right on time at Ciudad Real station by 10 AM.
From the moment I stepped onto the Renfe AVE train from Córdoba to Ciudad Real, it felt like settling into a calm and polished travel routine. In First Class, the layout follows a 2+1 seating arrangement. I had a spacious reclining seat with a footrest and a sturdy fold-out table. Power outlets are conveniently located beside each seat, and adjustable reading lights make it easy to read or work during the short ride. Overhead racks provided plenty of room for my bag, with luggage bays near the doors for larger items. You can bring up to 25 kg across three pieces of luggage. The Wi-Fi via PlayRenfe connected quickly, and the signal remained stable for most of the trip. It’s fast enough for checking emails or scrolling social media. You can also stream movies and TV shows from the onboard entertainment portal. The restroom was located at the end of the carriage, but I didn’t have a chance to use it during this short journey. The bar car was another highlight. It’s bright and modern, with a menu offering light snacks like chips and pastries, as well as hot and cold drinks. I ordered a €2.20 coffee, which I thought was a reasonable price for a train. The route itself is wonderfully scenic, with olive groves and rolling Andalusian hills before giving way to the open plains of Castilla-La Mancha. It’s a short but memorable journey, and one that I’d happily take again.
I bought my train ticket about a month ahead of time, and booking through Omio made it easy to compare times and fares. Prices tend to rise closer to departure, so I recommend booking as early as possible. Overall, it felt like great value for a fast, premium connection between two regional hubs.
