Amsterdam is the iconic, trendy and lively capital of the Netherlands.  A location steeped in history, the city began as a small fish village as early as the 12th century. Later it became one of the world's leading ports for trade and finance and more recently it has developed as a cultural hotspot. It attracts as many as 19 million tourists every year and is famous for its canals as well as a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. Chock full of museums and coffee shops, Amsterdam has a number of unique accolades such as possessing the cleanest tap water in Europe and a long-standing position as one the continent's top tourist draws. As the fastest growing train station in the city, Amsterdam Zuid is linked to the city center in a number of ways. There are also a large number of connections going from another of the city's train stations, Amsterdam central station and Amsterdam Zuid, as well as routes across the Netherlands and further afield.

Dam Square, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city, is located just under 2.5 miles (four kilometers) from the train station. It can be reached via subway in as little as 11 minutes or travelers looking to take in the city up close can also walk between the two locations in just under an hour.

How far is it from the city center to the train station?

Passengers traveling to train station Amsterdam Zuid from Amsterdam city center or vice versa can avail of either a train service or a bus connection. The distance between the two is three miles (five kilometers) and the journey itself takes roughly 24 minutes. It involves one changeover, which usually happens at either Duivendrecht station or Schipol airport. Transfer times are limited to between five and eight minutes. Amsterdam RAI is located just east of Amsterdam Zuid station and offers a shorter connection to Amsterdam Centraal than Zuid station, therefore it may be more convenient for passengers who find themselves in that area. Amsterdam RAI service lines 50 and 51 as well as a tram that runs to Amsterdam Central via Rembrandtplein and Riveierenbuurt.

How accessible is the train station for those with limited mobility?

In general, Amsterdam rail and tram services offer good wheelchair and limited mobility access options. Elevators with wheelchair access in mind are available at almost all stations. However, it is important to bear in mind that at major rail stations such as Amsterdam Zuid, it is usually required to book a reservation in advance to access trains via wheelchair. This is because train services including but not limited to regional or interregional trains require staff members to manually create a ramp for wheelchair access. As these services operate at a tight schedule, it is not always possible to request this at short notice and rarely if ever at the platform itself. Passengers traveling with wheelchairs who have not booked a reservation in advance can try to do so at the information desk of the station itself, but this is not always possible and in cases where it is, it may involve a delay of up to one hour.
