Alfa Pendular, the fastest high-speed tilting train in Portugal, is owned by Comboios de Portugal. Comboios de Portugal, better known colloquially as CP, is fully owned by the Portuguese government and serves almost all of Portugal as the largest railway provider.

Alfa Pendular is a six-car electric train that uses unique tilting technology to ensure a smooth and comfortable ride even at speeds of up to 137 mph. This Portuguese high-speed rail provider mostly operates trains in Portugal, but you can also find some connections into Spain such as an Alfa Pendular train from Lisbon to Madrid. Alfa Pendular offers two different ticket types for travelers to choose from based on their budgets and what amenities they would like to enjoy during their train journey. On weekends, trains are a little less frequent, but overall, you can expect this journey to take just under 3 hours. Routes like Braga to Faro may start a little earlier, around 6 am, and the last departure is usually around 1 pm. This route, leaving around 5 times per day during the week, will typically take about 7 or 8 hours.

On the weekend, these departures typically occur about 3 times per day. Of course, things like weather, construction, and other unforeseen events can affect these departures and travel times. As a result, each Alfa Pendular train is equipped with lifts to facilitate wheelchair access from the platform to the train and vice versa. There are also reserved seats for those with limited mobility in wheelchairs. You will also find an adapted toilet on board each Alfa Pendular train.

Do I need an ID or a passport to travel with Alfa Pendular?

Yes. In order to book your ticket with Alfa Pendular, you will need to provide a form of ID. When you board the train, be sure that you have this same form of ID available to show to the attendant checking your ticket. This is usually in the form of a valid passport from your home country.

Can I bring on board with me free luggage?

Yes. All passengers can carry smaller hand luggage for personal use free of charge on Alfa Pendular trains. These smaller items must fit on the luggage rack or under your seat. You can also carry one item of larger luggage, but any more luggage is subject to the availability of space on the train.
