How to Get to Naples — Train, Bus, Flight & Ferry to Amalfi

Travelling to Naples? Compare trains, buses, flights, plus ferries to Capri, Amalfi and Sorrento—all in one search.

Naples (Napoli) is the ultimate gateway to southern Italy. Whether you arrive via Capodichino airport, Napoli Centrale train station, or one of the bustling ferry terminals, Omio lets you compare all transport options. Find the cheapest, fastest, or most scenic route to start your coastal Italian adventure.

Transport Options to Naples: Which is Best?

Naples is unique because it relies heavily on four distinct modes of transportation:

  • Trains to Naples: The fastest domestic option. High-speed trains from Rome, Florence, and Milan arrive directly in the city center at Napoli Centrale station.
  • Buses to Naples: The most budget-friendly choice. Companies like FlixBus and Itabus run extensive domestic and European routes, typically dropping passengers off near Napoli Centrale.
  • Flights to Naples: Perfect for international travelers. Naples International Airport (NAP) receives a huge volume of global and low-cost European flights daily.
  • Ferries from Naples: Naples is the primary maritime hub for the region. Ferries and hydrofoils operate daily out of the Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa terminals, connecting the city to the islands and the Amalfi Coast.

Naples Airport (NAP) & Transfer to City

Naples International Airport (Capodichino - NAP) is incredibly convenient, located just 7 km from the city center.

  • Alibus Shuttle: The dedicated Alibus airport shuttle is the best way to travel into the city. It departs frequently from the terminal, taking about 20 minutes to reach Napoli Centrale station, and 35 minutes to reach the Molo Beverello ferry port.
  • Taxi: A fixed-rate taxi ride to the central station or port takes roughly 15 minutes.
  • Onward Connections: Once you arrive at Napoli Centrale via the shuttle, you can immediately connect to the Circumvesuviana train to reach Sorrento or Pompeii, or catch a bus to the Amalfi Coast.

Day Trips from Naples: Transport Hub

Naples is the perfect base camp for exploring the surrounding UNESCO heritage sites and coastal towns. Here is how to navigate the most popular routes:

  • Naples to Sorrento: Head to the underground level of Napoli Centrale and take the regional Circumvesuviana train. The journey takes about 1 hour.
  • Naples to Pompeii: Take the same Circumvesuviana train toward Sorrento, but disembark at the Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri stop. The trip takes just 35 minutes.
  • Naples to Capri: Head to the Molo Beverello port and catch a high-speed ferry or hydrofoil. The scenic crossing to Capri takes roughly 50 minutes.
  • Naples to the Amalfi Coast (Amalfi town): You can take a direct ferry from Naples to Amalfi during the summer, or take the train to Sorrento and transfer to the local SITA bus for a stunning coastal drive.
  • Naples to Positano: The fastest way is to take a ferry directly from Naples to Positano. Alternatively, take the train to Sorrento and catch a shorter ferry or bus from there.

Travelling to Naples & Day Trips FAQs

The absolute best way to travel from Rome or Florence to Naples is by high-speed train (Trenitalia's Frecciarossa or Italo). The journey from Rome takes just 1 hour and 15 minutes, while the trip from Florence takes around 3 hours, arriving directly at Napoli Centrale.

Taking a long-distance bus (like FlixBus or Itabus) is usually the cheapest domestic option. If you are flying, booking budget airlines into Naples Airport (NAP) well in advance can yield massive savings. Advance regional train tickets are also very budget-friendly.

The train (Circumvesuviana) is the cheapest and most reliable year-round option, taking about 1 hour. However, during the summer months, taking a ferry from Naples to Sorrento is highly recommended for its incredible views of the coastline and Mount Vesuvius, taking about 40 minutes.

Naples connects to all these destinations seamlessly. Use the Circumvesuviana train from Napoli Centrale for Pompeii and Sorrento. For Capri, Positano, and the Amalfi Coast, taking a direct ferry from the Naples Molo Beverello port is the fastest and most scenic option during the high season.

The easiest way is to take the official Alibus airport shuttle. It departs from just outside the arrivals terminal and makes dedicated stops at Napoli Centrale train station (20 minutes) and the city's main ferry ports (35 minutes).
