I took Renfe’s AVE train from Ourense to Madrid after spending a few days in Galicia. The high-speed connection links Spain’s lush northwest with its bustling capital. Traveling in First Class made the trip even more enjoyable. Watching the scenery change from Galicia’s green hills to the sunlit plains of Castile was the perfect way to pass the time during the journey. Here's what to expect if you'll be taking the train from Ourense to Madrid.
The Renfe AVE train route from Ourense to Madrid covers about 445 km in under 2 hours and 30 minutes. It’s one of Spain’s most scenic high-speed routes, starting in Galicia’s forested hills before crossing deep valleys on viaducts and emerging onto the wide Castilian plateau. The journey shows how Renfe’s technology effortlessly connects two distinct regions. Compared to flying from Ourense to Madrid, Renfe's AVE train delivers passengers straight to Madrid’s city centre in comfort and style.
I booked my Ourense-Madrid train ticket about one month in advance on Omio. I reserved a First Class seat on Renfe's AVE train, and the mobile ticket was available in the app after paying online. The booking process was simple, and comparing timetables and fares was especially helpful. Boarding involved the standard ticket check and security inspection. The train departed from Ourense-Empalme station right on time, and the overall process felt calm and efficient from start to finish. You can also take the bus from Ourense to Madrid, but the trip can take 7–8 hours, making the train a much more practical option for me.
Ourense-Empalme is located near the city centre and close to the Miño River. There are taxis and local buses available right outside, making it easily accessible from anywhere in the city. The train station is compact and well-maintained, with a few small shops and kiosks. There is a cozy café there that has a pleasant terrace area, which is a perfect place to relax before departure.
Trains from Ourense arrive at Madrid Chamartín station. It has connections to metro lines 1 and 10, along with suburban trains and city buses. It's really easy to reach from anywhere in Madrid and its suburbs. Modernisation works are currently underway, and once complete, it will be one of the most impressive stations in Europe.
Renfe AVE currently operates multiple trains daily between Ourense and Madrid, departing from around 7:26 AM to 8:43 PM. The trip takes less than 2 hours and 30 minutes. Renfe’s Alvia and Avlo services also run on this route. Combined, there are usually about 11 direct trains each day, all traveling between the Ourense-Empalme and Madrid-Chamartín stations. As I was heading to Madrid for a day trip, I took the first morning departure and arrived right on time.
Once on board, the Renfe AVE train from Ourense to Madrid felt sleek and comfortable right from the start. The cabin was spotless and quiet, with a smooth takeoff that quickly showed the speed Renfe’s high-speed trains are famous for. In First Class, seats were arranged in a 2+1 layout and reclined generously, with plenty of legroom and an adjustable footrest. Each seat had a fold-out tray, power socket, reading light, and an individual entertainment screen featuring movies, TV shows, and a live route map. The PlayRENFE Wi-Fi service worked dependably during most of the trip. I always enjoy reading the digital newspapers on the entertainment platform and for checking the weather to wherever I'm heading. Restrooms were stocked with soap and tissues, something you really notice on longer rides. Midway through, I visited the bar car, which had both self-service and staffed counters. I picked up a cappuccino, fresh garden salad, and a bottle of water, all served with friendly efficiency. It’s a nice space to stretch your legs and chat with other travelers. The views along the route are remarkable, from the sunny Castilian plains to the lush Galician mountains, offering a real sense of traveling across regions and climates in just a few hours. As a matter of fact, on the day I traveled, I departed Ourense with a temperature around 25ºC and arrived in Madrid with over 35ºC!
Booking about a month in advance on Omio gave me an excellent First Class fare. Renfe’s AVE tickets include a luggage allowance of up to three pieces with a combined maximum of 25 kg. Combined with the great onboard service, I thought my Ourense–Madrid train ticket was a great deal.
