Milan to Tirano by trainMilan to Tirano by Train: The Scenic Route to the Swiss Border
By Koen Berghuis
There are frequent trains from Milan to Tirano, the Italian town on the Swiss border where you can catch the famous Bernina Express. It’s a scenic ride that already puts you in the mood for all the Alpine beauty to come once you reach Tirano. I really enjoyed this train journey and all the beautiful views from the window over the Italian lakes and mountains.

Trenord train at the station of Tirano
Route overview
Trains from Milan to Tirano are run by the regional operator Trenord. The 155-kilometer (96-mile) train journey from Milano Centrale, Milan’s main railway station, to Tirano takes 2 hours and 32 minutes.
The train journey is not particularly fast, but considering the mountainous terrain and the many intermediate stops these regional trains make, the travel time is perfectly understandable.
Transportation experience
I booked my train ticket from Milan to Tirano on the Omio website, which is very easy to use. If you book a regional train ticket in Italy online, it is valid only for the departure you select.
However, you can change the date or departure time online as needed, provided the selected train has not yet departed.
If instead you buy a paper ticket for a regional train, you must validate it in one of the machines on the platform before boarding, otherwise you may be fined.
Departure station
I arrived at Milan’s imposing central station by metro. Milan Centrale is a large station, so if it is your first time here, you may want to allow some extra time to find your way around or to admire the beautiful building.
As one of Italy’s busiest stations, Milan Centrale has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, where you can buy food or drinks for the journey ahead. I would highly recommend doing so, as there are no catering services on the regional train from Milan to Tirano.
To access the platform at Milan Centrale, you need to scan the QR code on your ticket to pass through the barriers. Simply check the departures board to see which platform your train leaves from, and then board.
Arrival station
The train from Milan arrives at Tirano’s Italian railway station, which has a small café. Next to the Italian station is the Swiss station of the Rhaetian Railways, from where the narrow-gauge Bernina Express to St. Moritz and Chur departs. Note that these are separate stations, but they are only a short walk across a square from each other.
Schedule & frequency
The train schedule from Milan to Tirano is highly efficient, with a departure once every hour for most of the day. This means there is almost always a train that fits your schedule.
Onboard experience & services
The Trenord trains between Milan and Tirano offer both First and Second Class, though the seats are nearly identical, arranged in a 2+2 configuration in both classes. It is a typical regional train, so don’t expect any facilities on board, apart from power sockets at most seats. The train does have toilets.
Overall, I found the train comfortable enough for the 2 hour and 32 minute journey.
Ticketing advice & budget breakdown
For my train ticket from Milan to Tirano, I paid €12.50. Regional trains in Italy, such as the Trenord service from Milan to Tirano, have a fixed price and cannot sell out, so it makes no difference whether you buy your ticket in advance or on the day of travel.
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €12.5 |
| Food & drinks | €2 |
