I decided to take my laptop on the road for a remote work day travelling between Berlin and Rotterdam. Despite some unforeseen issues, the journey was pleasant and productive.
Departing from Berlin Hauptbahnhof in the morning, the journey took around 6.5 hours with two connections. I paid around €10 extra for an upgrade to first class which offered power outlets, stronger wifi, extra legroom and in my case, an entire enclosed cabin, which normally seats 6, to work privately.
It was a sunny day and very relaxing to travel in this private compartment. Overall the train didn’t feel too busy and the toilets were in good order. Unfortunately we did have to stop at a local station as the conductor was alerted to animals on the train tracks up ahead, so this factor meant that I missed my connecting trains. But fortunately my ticket was valid on later trains to get me to my final destination. The ticket conductor was very informative and explained the situation and apologised for the inconvenience.
Despite delays, this trip showed how train travel can double as productive work time — especially with first-class comforts and Omio’s flexible, easily interchangeable tickets.
