Being in Nimes and needing to return to Avignon early in the evening, I took the Renfe AVE Internacional train. It was the most comfortable and efficient option for this short journey. Renfe’s AVE service connects cities across France and Spain with speed and ease, offering a great alternative to driving. Here's what you need to know about taking the train from Nimes to Avignon.

Renfe AVE Nimes to Avignon TGV train
The Nimes to Avignon train route covers approximately 45 km, running along the southeast of France at speeds of up to 300 km/h. This line is shared by both Renfe AVE and TGV trains, although I travelled on Renfe’s AVE Internacional service. Avignon itself is a charming city, known for its medieval walls and the famous Palais des Papes. It’s the kind of place that rewards slow travel, and taking the train felt like the perfect way to travel from Nimes to Avignon, without the stress of traffic or parking.
I booked my First Class ticket for the AVE train to Avignon on Omio the day before travelling and paid €27. Omio’s booking system was safe, secure, and very easy to use. After payment, I received my mobile ticket almost instantly, which made check-in quick and simple. There’s also a bus from Nimes to Avignon that takes around one hour, but I didn’t really consider it since the train is my favourite way to travel. It's faster, smoother and far more comfortable.

Renfe AVE Nimes to Avignon TGV train
Avignon TGV is a modern high-speed station located about 6 km from the city centre on the LGV Méditerranée line. It opened in 2001 and serves as a major hub for TGV, TER, and international services. Inside, you’ll find cafés, vending machines and other useful facilities. From here, I walked to my hotel, as it was only around 20 minutes away.
Nimes station connects to multiple buses and taxis, making it easily accessible from anywhere in the city. It’s a beautiful elevated terminal with essential amenities, including a café and a small eatery. It's a really good spot to grab a quick bite or espresso while waiting for your train. Arriving early at Nimes is always a good idea, as the station’s relaxed atmosphere makes the short wait pleasant.
Renfe's AVE service from Nimes to Avignon TGV runs once daily, departing at 8:32 PM. However, other operators such as SNCF’s TGV and TER regional trains also run this route. Together, there are around 20 departures per day running between Nimes and Avignon. I booked my ticket the day before departure, and as expected with Renfe AVE, it left right on time at 8:32 PM and arrived only just 20 minutes later.
Traveling in First Class on the AVE train from Nimes to Avignon felt extremely relaxing. The seats have a good amount of recline and provide enough legroom to stretch out comfortably. Each seat has a reading light, a power outlet and a fold-down tray to eat or work on. Renfe AVE trains provide Wi-Fi via the PlayRENFE platform. The entertainment app lets you stream films, TV series, and documentaries. The connection worked well enough to brush up on my French and check the maps on the way. The bar car is always my favorite place on the train. Seeing that this trip was so short, I stayed in my seat the entire time. I usually grab coffee and a pastry, but not this time. For luggage, there are overhead racks and larger storage areas near the doors and restrooms. Renfe AVE permits up to three bags, with a combined total weight of 25 kg, which was more than enough for my day pack. The scenery is pleasant throughout this short trip across southern France, passing open countryside and vineyards. The highlight is a brief but beautiful glimpse of Provence before arriving right on time at Avignon TGV.
I recommend booking at least a couple of weeks in advance to find the best fares, even though I didn’t for this train to Avignon. With a generous luggage policy and a First Class seat, I thought it was still a good deal for what I paid.
