I love traveling by train across Italy. It not only provides a comfortable and affordable way to get around, but you’re also treated to some great views. Needless to say, I chose the train when I needed to travel from Naples to Taranto. Let’s take a look at what this journey is like!

The Naples to Taranto InterCity train
Trains from Napoli to Taranto are operated by the national railway company, Trenitalia. On this route, you can choose between InterCity and regional trains. InterCity trains offer greater comfort than regional trains. They are also a bit faster, as they stop at fewer stations along the way.
The distance by rail from Naples to Taranto is 313 kilometers (194 miles), with InterCity trains taking around 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete the journey.
Booking your Napoli-Taranto train tickets is easy on Omio. With a single search, you can view all train departures for the day and sort them by departure time or price. That way, you can easily choose the best option for your travel plans. The fare conditions are clearly shown, such as whether your ticket is changeable or refundable, which is another feature that I really appreciate.
Trains from Naples to Taranto depart from Napoli Centrale, the city’s main railway station. The station is easily reached by public transportation from across Naples, including the metro. There are plenty of shops and cafés here, perfect if you want something to eat or drink before departure.
The main railway station of Taranto is simply named “Taranto”. From this station, you need to walk about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the historic town center. Alternatively, you can catch a city bus or take a taxi from the station forecourt.
Generally, there are 3–4 daily direct trains between Naples and Taranto, of which two are InterCity trains. You’ll find more options if you’re open to trains with one or two connections.
I took the morning InterCity train from Naples to Taranto, traveling in first class. The seats in first class are comfortable and arranged in a spacious 1+2 configuration. As a solo traveler, having a solo seat was a real bonus. Seats have power sockets, but there is no Wi-Fi on the train. The journey from Naples to Taranto is highly enjoyable, offering idyllic countryside scenery from the window. It’s mostly mountains and rolling hills that you see along the way. However, there are occasional glimpses of the sea, mostly at the beginning and end of the journey.
I booked my first-class train ticket about three weeks in advance and paid just €20.90. Ticket prices for InterCity trains vary based on demand and are generally cheaper when you book them well in advance. Your ticket automatically includes a seat reservation. Keep in mind that tickets for InterCity trains can sell out, so it’s best to book early for travel in high summer or around national holidays. Tickets for regional trains, however, have a fixed price and cannot sell out. That's because these trains do not have seat reservations.

The train ride from Naples to Taranto is an especially pleasant journey across southern Italy. You can expect to see fine views over the rugged landscape, as well as idyllic towns and villages.
