The south-eastern Italian region of Puglia, often referred to as the “heel of Italy”, has generally good rail connections. It’s easy to travel between its major towns and cities by train. This is also the case when you need to travel from Lecce to Taranto. Below, I’ll show you what this train journey is like!

The Lecce to Taranto InterCity train
The train from Lecce to Taranto is operated by Trenitalia, the national railway company of Italy. All direct trains on this route are InterCity (IC) services. Theoretically, you can also travel this route on a one-stop connection using regional trains, but since journey times are much longer, I wouldn’t recommend it.
The distance by rail from Lecce to Taranto is 108 kilometers (67 miles), with InterCity trains taking around 1 hour and 30 minutes for the journey.
Booking Lecce to Taranto train tickets on Omio is simple. In a single search, you can view all available trains and sort them by departure time, price, or trip duration. I also like that the fare conditions are clearly shown, such as whether your ticket is changeable or refundable.
The main railway station in Lecce is simply called “Lecce” on train timetables. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the magnificent Baroque old town. The railway station in Lecce is fairly small and easy to navigate. It has a small shop and a café if you want to eat or buy something before departure.
The main railway station in Taranto is also simply referred to as “Taranto” on train timetables. It’s about a 15 to 20-minute walk from the historic centre on an island in the bay. Alternatively, you can catch one of the frequent buses or a taxi.
There are generally three direct InterCity trains a day from Lecce to Taranto. However, more options are available if you don’t mind a one-stop itinerary with a change of trains.
I took an InterCity train to travel from Lecce to Taranto. Seats on these classic locomotive-pulled trains are in a 2+2 configuration in second class, which was the option I took on this relatively short journey. In case you prefer first class, seats are in a more spacious 1+2 configuration. There were power sockets on the train, but it was not equipped with Wi-Fi. InterCity trains do not have a café-bar coach, although they do have vending machines. Regardless, it’s generally better to bring your own food and drinks. The journey itself from Lecce to Taranto is fairly pleasant, with some decent views over the countryside of Puglia.
I booked the InterCity train from Lecce to Taranto about three weeks before travel and paid €14 for a ticket in second class. Tickets for long-distance services in Italy, including both InterCity and high-speed trains, are priced dynamically based on demand. This means they are usually cheaper if you book in advance or travel at off-peak times during quieter months. Booking ahead is recommended if you are traveling in the summer or during national holidays, as tickets for long-distance trains can sell out.

The journey from Lecce to Taranto by train offers a comfortable way to travel across Puglia. With around three daily InterCity services, it’s a reliable option, although planning ahead is recommended. If you book early and come prepared with snacks, it’s an easy and enjoyable trip between these two cities.
