More bus stops are within a five- minute walk from the station. The Outwood train station is farther to the city center; located seven and a half miles (12 kilometers) from the downtown area while the Wakefield Kirkgate station is only a short walk from the town center at three-quarters of a mile (one kilometer). Rideshare is a cost-effective way to get to the various stations and takes fewer than 30 minutes. Taxi is the fastest means, and it takes less than 20 minutes but is a more expensive alternative to public or shared transit.

The Wakefield Westgate​ train station provides various services or passengers with reduced mobility. Staff members are available to personally assist passengers with getting on and off trains. Passengers requiring such assistance should contact the station in advance of their arrival. Help is available from 5:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. daily. There are various dedicated parking spaces for wheelchair users, ramps for train access, and accessible restrooms throughout the station. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an international gallery that displays artwork by artists from across the globe and is accessible by bus from Westgate station. Buses run directly to the park. The Newmillerdam Country Park is four and a half miles (seven kilometers) south of the station and is a 27-minute bike ride. This local nature reserve is also accessible by bus from Wakefield Westgate station.
