There are a variety of different ways to travel from the Wakefield city center to Wakefield Westgate train station. The Wakefield bus station is located opposite the Trinity Walk shopping center and offers a wide range of bus services. The Wakefield City bus operates on this route and its drop off stop for rail passengers is located approximately 150 ft (50 m) from the train station entrance. More bus stops are within a five- minute walk from the station. There are also pedestrian pathways from the city center that meander scenically throughout the town, a leisurely way to reach the Wakefield Westgate station.  The easiest paths are via George Street or via Ings road and it takes approximately 20 minutes to cover the distance.

The Outwood train station is farther to the city center; located seven and a half miles (12 kilometers) from the downtown area while the Wakefield Kirkgate station is only a short walk from the town center at three-quarters of a mile (one kilometer). Rideshare is a cost-effective way to get to the various stations and takes fewer than 30 minutes. Taxi is the fastest means, and it takes less than 20 minutes but is a more expensive alternative to public or shared transit.

The Wakefield Westgate​ train station provides various services or passengers with reduced mobility. Staff members are available to personally assist passengers with getting on and off trains. Passengers requiring such assistance should contact the station in advance of their arrival. Help is available from 5:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. daily. There are various dedicated parking spaces for wheelchair users, ramps for train access, and accessible restrooms throughout the station. There is step-free access with power elevators between platforms 1 and 2. There are also accessible ticket counters and ticket machines with lowered windows for easier use. There are only a few accessible taxis in the area. Booking these taxis in advance is recommended.

With a few hours to spare between train connections, there is plenty for visitors to do without straying too far from the station. Sites to explore include the National Coal Mining Museum. It offers guided underground tours and is easily reached by bus from the station. The total journey takes approximately 35 minutes. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an international gallery that displays artwork by artists from across the globe and is accessible by bus from Westgate station. Buses run directly to the park. The Newmillerdam Country Park is four and a half miles (seven kilometers) south of the station and is a 27-minute bike ride. This local nature reserve is also accessible by bus from Wakefield Westgate station.
