The beautiful city of Limoges is the capital of the Haute-Vienne region of France and is probably best known for its 19th century porcelain industry and medieval enamels. As visitors wander through the street's of Limoges they will see evidence of its Roman past; the remains of one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the region of ancient Gaul has been excavated. The River Vienne can be crossed over the bridge of Saint Martial, parts of which also date from the Roman period. The pedestrianised street of La Boucherie contains many medieval half-timbered houses, as well as the Butcher's House, which is home to a small museum. The street is named for the many butchers' shops that used to line it and the small Chapel of Saint-Aurelien is dedicated to the patron saint of butchers. A visit to the city's huge art museum, the Musee des Beaux Arts, allows visitors to admire their extensive collection of Limoges porcelain and enamels. Also in the museum are displays of Egyptian artefacts, fine art and evidence of the city's past. A pleasant place to spend a couple of hours is The Jardin Botanique de L'Eveche, a botanical garden occupying several terraces overlooking the River Vienne. organized in traditional French parterres, the garden has specimens from medicinal, industrial, food and aromatic plants.
