Traveling around Strasbourg

The best way to see everything in Strasbourg is on foot or bike, but there is also a comprehensive public transport system (but no subway). There's really no need for a subway, as the tramway system does the job, with six lines covering every corner of the city. Renting a car is another option, which gives you access to the nearby Rhine valley and even the ski slopes of the Vosges mountains if you wish.

How to get there

By air: Strasbourg Airport is located in Entzheim, around 6 miles south-west of the city. The best way into town is via the Shuttle Train, which takes 9 minutes and leaves every 15 minutes.

By bus: Getting the bus to Strasbourg is easy and convenient with services running daily from many of the surrounding cities. Once at the bus station visitors can continue into the city by using many of the good transportation links including buses and trams that run at a regular basis during the day.

By train: You can travel to Strasbourg from London by the Eurostar and TGV with services daily.

About Strasbourg

Located near the border between Germany and France, Strasbourg has always been one of Europe's crossroads, and is one of the continent's most cosmopolitan, sophisticated cities. The city is small enough to see most attractions by walking, and it is also extremely safe for cyclists. In fact, you can carry your bike on the tram, making seeing everything much easier. The modern city is based around the busy EU-quarter (home to the European Parliament) but there are historic areas like La Petite France, which is filled with gorgeous timber-framed buildings. It's a great place for an Alsatian beer beside the river.

Must See: Visit the Cathedral of Notre-Dame - the sixth tallest in the world, see masterpieces by Monet and Picasso at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art or soak up the splendour of the Palais Rohan.

Must Do: The best way to get a feel for the city's history is by taking a boat tour on the River Ill, which leaves from the Palais Rohan and takes 70 minutes. It's restful, beautiful and convenient, and English speaking guides will explain everything.
