I am not really a spelunker, but the Nerja Caves somehow managed to spark my curiosity when I saw some photos of it online. It looked like it was quite impressive, and I even heard that families with young kids could visit it quite easily, which somehow calmed me a bit about visiting the caves. So, I decided to visit the Nerja Caves on a day trip from Málaga. I took an early morning bus from Málaga to visit the Nerja Caves, and it was a very easy and affordable option because it was run by ALSA.

Nerja is located around 50 kilometers east of Málaga in Costa del Sol. The two destinations can be accessed via ALSA buses that run regularly from the main bus station in Málaga, which is located next to the María Zambrano railway station. It takes around 1-1.5 hours for the buses to travel from Málaga to Nerja. This means that the service can be utilized for a visit to Nerja at short notice.

Transportation experience

I was able to catch the bus at Estación de Autobuses de Málaga, which is literally right next door to the train station at María Zambrano. This is the main bus station for long-distance buses in the city, and it’s very easy to find out where the platforms are and when the buses are leaving. Once leaving Málaga, the bus took the A7 road that runs along the coast and passes through various small towns and bits of the Mediterranean shoreline. It’s really quite a nice route, provided you can get a window seat. As I was leaving fairly early in the day, the bus was quiet and the trip was very relaxed, making for a comfortable start to the day.

Departure station

The Málaga Bus Station is also advantageously positioned near the María Zambrano railway station, so it is accessible from anywhere. Inside the station, there are ticket counters, waiting areas, and information about the departure platforms for each bus.

Arrival station

The bus drops us off at Nerja Bus Station, which is a short walk to the town center. From there, it is easy to continue on to the old town, beaches, or take a taxi or local bus to the Nerja Caves, which are just outside the town.

There are several buses running a day between Malaga and Nerja. With multiple departures a day, it is not difficult to plan a day trip to Nerja, leaving Malaga in the morning and returning in the late afternoon or evening.
