I took Renfe’s AVE train from Valladolid to León to see the city’s famous cathedral and old town for the first time. The train runs at speeds of up to 300 km/h, cutting straight across the plains of Castile in smooth, quiet comfort. Traveling in First Class made it even better. Wide seats and excellent onboard amenities kept the short trip relaxing, from start to finish. Here's what to expect if you're making the same journey by train.
The Renfe AVE train between Valladolid and León covers about 165 km, linking the regional capital with the historic city of León through Spain’s modern high-speed network. The route runs northwest across the plains of Castile, with gentle hills appearing as you near León. It’s a fast and scenic ride that shows how Spain’s rail system combines technology and landscape in a way that driving simply can’t match. Saving both time and energy while offering better views, this is easily my favorite way to travel from Valladolid to León.
I booked my Renfe AVE ticket about one month in advance. To compare fares and times, I used Omio and ended up paying €31.50 for a First Class seat. The mobile ticket appeared instantly in the Omio app, and both seat selection and payment were easy. I also considered taking the bus from Valladolid to León, but it can take up to 2 to 3 hours. The AVE is faster and arrives right in the city center.
The train to León departs from Valladolid-Campo Grande. This is a striking late 19th-century station that still retains much of its original architecture. The main hall’s ceiling is especially worth a look before boarding. The terminal serves long-distance and regional trains, as well as urban buses, so it’s easy to reach from anywhere in the city. Inside, you’ll find small cafés and shops for a quick coffee or snack. Boarding involves standard Renfe security and ticket checks, which were smooth and punctual during my visit.
Trains from Valladolid arrive at León station. It's conveniently close to the city centre, only about a 10-minute walk from the historic quarter. I recommend checking out the Cathedral of León if you can. Taxis and city buses wait just outside the exit, but I was staying within a short walk.
Renfe AVE operates about five high-speed trains daily between Valladolid and León, with departures from around 10:56 AM to 9:27 PM. The fastest trains complete the trip in just over 1 hour. Other Renfe services, including Alvia and Media Distancia, also run on this route. To get the most from my day trip to León, I took the first departure and arrived almost exactly at noon. Schedules can vary, so checking Omio is the easiest way to confirm current departure times and prices.
The First Class cabin on the AVE train from Valladolid to León offered spacious reclining seats. Everyone gets individual entertainment screens showing films, music, and a live route map. You also get Wi-Fi via the PlayRENFE app, which worked reliably for most of the trip. Browsing through all the different series, documentaries, and newspapers is a good way to pass the time. A highlight of the trip was the modern bar car, redesigned with both self-service and attended options. Passengers can simply select items freely and then pay at the counter. It’s cozy, modern, and a nice way to stretch your legs mid-journey. I bought my usual hot coffee and a fresh croissant from the café bar. The train also has restrooms onboard, which were well stocked with soap and tissue. At the carriage ends are also luggage racks in case you bring some larger bags. You can bring up to 25kg of luggage, which was more than enough for my small backpack and day pack. I kept my bag overhead and the day pack under the seat. Views of the sunny Castilian plains along the route are remarkable, offering a relaxing way to pass the time. The best views are from the left side, which is where I sat on the train from Valladolid to León. Before I knew it, we pulled in, and it was time to explore a new city.
Booking about a month in advance gave me an excellent First Class fare. Renfe’s AVE tickets already include a luggage allowance of up to three pieces, so together with the great onboard service, I thought the ticket price was excellent value.
