Information about the Tokyo to Hiroshima train route

The Tokyo to Hiroshima bullet train is one of Japan's most iconic rail journeys, connecting two of the country's most historically and culturally significant cities. The route is served by the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen line, with trains departing from Tokyo Station (1-9 Marunouchi, Chiyoda City, Tokyo 100-0005) and arriving at Hiroshima Station (2-37 Matsubaracho, Minami Ward, Hiroshima 732-0822). The total distance between the two cities is approximately 894 kilometers, making it one of the longest Shinkansen journeys you can take in a single leg across Japan.

The fastest way to complete this journey is aboard the Nozomi service, which takes around 4 hours and makes only limited stops along the way. If you hold a JR Pass, keep in mind that the Nozomi is not covered — you will need to take the Hikari or Kodama services instead. The Hikari takes approximately 4 hours 40 minutes, while the slower Kodama can take upwards of 6 hours due to its many intermediate stops. For most travelers, the Hikari strikes the best balance between speed and JR Pass compatibility.

Best time of year to visit Hiroshima from Tokyo Spring (late March to early April) is particularly popular, as Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park is stunning when the cherry blossoms are in bloom along the Motoyasu River. Autumn (October to November) is another excellent time, with mild temperatures and vivid foliage across the city and nearby Miyajima Island. Summer can be hot and humid, though the Peace Memorial Ceremony on 6 August draws visitors from around the world. Winter travel is quieter and more affordable, and the journey itself remains just as comfortable year-round.

We recommend using the JR Pass for traveling in trains all around Japan to save more money if you pretend to do many trips. You can check the correct prices for every station or shinkansen connection in Omio's JR Pass information.

Tokyo to Hiroshima by train: what to expect on board

Traveling on the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Hiroshima is a remarkably smooth and comfortable experience, a world away from the turbulence of air travel or the monotony of a long-distance bus. The trains are known for their punctuality — average delays are measured in seconds, not minutes — and their interiors are clean, well-maintained, and thoughtfully designed for longer journeys.

Seats are spacious by rail standards, with generous legroom even in Standard (Ordinary) Class. Each seat has a fold-down tray table, a seat-back pocket, and power outlets on newer rolling stock. Overhead luggage racks accommodate standard carry-on bags, though large suitcases should be placed in the dedicated oversized luggage spaces located at the rear of certain carriages — it is strongly recommended to reserve these spaces in advance if you are traveling with bulky luggage, as they are limited.

Best seats on the Tokyo to Hiroshima Shinkansen For arguably the most spectacular view in Japanese rail travel, book a seat on the right-hand side of the train (D or E seats, rows facing Osaka) between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka — on a clear day, you will be treated to breathtaking views of Mount Fuji, typically visible around Shin-Fuji Station approximately 40–50 minutes into the journey. The best window for spotting Fuji is between roughly 08:00 and 15:00 on days with good visibility. After Shin-Osaka, the landscape shifts to the rugged coastal scenery of the San'yo region, which is beautiful in its own right.

On board, you will find a buffet car (Green Car trains) or vending-style trolley service with snacks, drinks, and bento boxes. One of Japan's great travel traditions is enjoying an ekiben (station bento box) on the Shinkansen — Tokyo Station alone has dozens of options available in its basement food hall and platform-level kiosks. Pick one up before boarding and enjoy it as the Japanese countryside rolls past your window.

Carriages are divided into Ordinary Class, Green Car (equivalent to business class), and on some services, Gran Class — a premium cabin with reclining seats, complimentary meals, and attentive service. For a journey of around 4–5 hours, Green Car is worth considering if you value extra space and a quieter atmosphere.

There are also quiet carriages and a no-mobile-phone etiquette that is widely observed throughout all trains in Japan — speaking on your phone in the passenger cabin is considered impolite, so take calls in the space between carriages if needed.

Getting to Hiroshima and beyond

Arriving at Hiroshima Station puts you at the eastern edge of the city center, well-connected to all major sights and onward destinations. The station is a major transport hub with tram (streetcar), bus, and taxi services available directly outside the exits.

Getting around Hiroshima city Hiroshima has one of Japan's most charming urban tram networks, and it is by far the most convenient way to reach the Peace Memorial Park and Museum from the station. Trams run frequently and stops are clearly signed in English. A single ride costs ¥180, or you can purchase a one-day tram pass for ¥700 — excellent value if you plan to explore multiple areas. IC cards such as Suica or Pasmo (loaded at Tokyo Station) are accepted on the trams, making transfers seamless.

Day trip to Miyajima Island No visit to Hiroshima is complete without a trip to Miyajima Island (officially Itsukushima), home to the famous floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine. From Hiroshima Station, take the JR Sanyo Line to Miyajimaguchi Station (approximately 25 minutes), then board the ferry to the island (10 minutes). JR Pass holders can use the JR-operated ferry for free. The island is also home to friendly wild deer, a five-story pagoda, and excellent street food — particularly the local specialty momiji manju (maple leaf-shaped cakes filled with red bean paste).

Onward connections from Hiroshima Hiroshima is also a convenient base for further exploration of western Japan. The Shinkansen continues westward to Hakata (Fukuoka) in approximately 1 hour, making a day trip or overnight stay in Kyushu very manageable. Kyoto is around 1 hour 20 minutes away by Hikari, and Osaka approximately 1 hour 30 minutes — both easily reachable as part of a wider itinerary.

What to expect when you arrive in Hiroshima

Hiroshima Station has undergone significant redevelopment in recent years and is now a modern, well-organized facility with clear English-language signage throughout. Upon arriving on the Shinkansen platforms (located on the upper levels), follow the signs for the Central Exit (Shinkansen Exit) to access the main station building, where you will find tourist information, coin lockers for luggage storage, convenience stores, and a wide selection of restaurants and cafés.

First things to do in Hiroshima The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and its museum are the emotional and historical heart of the city. Allow at least half a day to absorb the exhibits, visit the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome) — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and walk through the park. The experience is profound and moving, and it is one that stays with visitors long after they leave.

Beyond the Peace Memorial, Hiroshima is a vibrant, forward-looking city with a thriving food scene. The local specialty is Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki — a layered savoury pancake with noodles, cabbage, pork, and a sweet-savoury sauce — which is quite different from the Osaka version and beloved by locals. The Okonomi-mura building near Hatchobori Station houses multiple small okonomiyaki restaurants across several floors and is a favorite among food lovers.

Practical tips for arriving travelers

  • Luggage forwarding (takkyubin): If you are continuing your journey and don't want to carry heavy bags, most convenience stores and the station itself offer next-day luggage delivery services to hotels across Japan — a genuinely useful service for Shinkansen travelers.
  • Tourist information: The Hiroshima Tourist Information Center is located inside the station and staffed by English-speaking assistants who can help with maps, transport advice, and accommodation.
  • Currency: While cashless payments are increasingly accepted, having some Japanese yen on hand is still advisable for smaller establishments, tram fares, and temple/shrine entry fees.
  • Connectivity: Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the station and in many public areas of the city. Purchasing a pocket Wi-Fi device or SIM card at Tokyo Station before departure is highly recommended for the duration of your trip.
