Hiroshima Station -> Kamiya-cho
The Himeji to Hiroshima shinkansen is one of the most rewarding stretches of the San'yō Shinkansen line, connecting two of western Japan's most historically significant cities. Himeji Station, located at 188-1 Ekimae-cho, Himeji, Hyogo 670-0927, sits directly in front of the iconic Himeji Castle, while Hiroshima Station at 2-37 Matsubaracho, Minami Ward, Hiroshima 732-0822 serves as the main gateway to the Peace Memorial City. The journey takes approximately 40 to 50 minutes depending on the shinkansen service you choose, making it a fast and efficient way to travel between these two destinations.
The San'yō Shinkansen operates two main service types on this route: the Nozomi, which is the fastest and makes fewer stops, completing the journey in around 40 minutes; and the Hikari and Kodama services, which stop at more stations and take slightly longer. It is worth noting that the Nozomi is not covered by the JR Pass, so travelers using a pass will want to book the Hikari or Kodama instead.
The best time of year to travel the Himeji to Hiroshima shinkansen route is during spring (late March to early April) for cherry blossom season, when both cities come alive with stunning sakura scenery, and autumn (mid-November) for vivid foliage. Summer travel in July and August is popular but can be very hot and humid, while winter offers fewer crowds and a more relaxed travel experience. If you are planning to visit Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park or Miyajima Island, avoid traveling on national holidays when both sites can become extremely busy.
When it comes to booking, reserving your seat in advance is strongly recommended, especially during peak travel periods such as Golden Week (late April to early May), Obon (mid-August), and the New Year holiday period. Reserved seats can be booked at any JR ticket office or through the JR smartphone app. JR Pass holders can reserve seats at no additional cost at a JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi).
We recommend using the JR Pass for traveling in trains all around Japan to save more money if you pretend to do many trips. You can check the correct prices for every station or shinkansen connection in Omio's JR Pass information.
Boarding the shinkansen at Himeji Station is a smooth and well-organized experience. Trains run frequently throughout the day, and the platforms are clearly marked with carriage and door position guides on the floor, so you always know exactly where to stand. The shinkansen departs punctually to the minute, so make sure you are on the platform a few minutes before departure.
On board, you will find spacious, reclining seats with generous legroom compared to standard rail services. The carriages are clean, quiet, and air-conditioned, making for a very comfortable journey even on a warm day. All seats face forward in the direction of travel, and overhead luggage racks are available for standard bags and suitcases. If you are traveling with oversized luggage, note that since 2020 JR has introduced an oversized baggage reservation system, and bags larger than 160 cm in total dimensions must be stored in a designated space behind the last row of certain carriages — book this at the time of ticket reservation.
Best seats to choose on the Himeji to Hiroshima shinkansen:
There is no dining car on short-distance shinkansen services like this, but station ekiben (train bento boxes) are widely available at Himeji Station before boarding. Himeji is particularly famous for its anago (conger eel) bento and Himeji oden flavors, which make for an enjoyable in-train meal. Drinks and light snacks are also sold by vendors who occasionally pass through the carriages on busier services.
Hiroshima Station is the central hub for onward travel throughout the region, and it is exceptionally well connected. Upon arrival, you have several options to continue your journey:
Miyajima Island (Itsukushima): This is the most popular day trip from Hiroshima and home to the iconic floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine. From Hiroshima Station, take the JR San'yō Line to Miyajimaguchi Station (approximately 26 minutes), then board the JR Ferry to the island (10 minutes). The ferry crossing is covered by the JR Pass, making it a cost-free addition for pass holders.
Hiroshima Streetcar (Hiroden): The city's tram network departs directly from outside Hiroshima Station and is one of the most convenient ways to reach the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, Naka Ward, and the city center. A single ride costs ¥180 for adults and ¥90 for children.
Onward shinkansen travel: Hiroshima Station sits on the San'yō Shinkansen line, meaning you can continue westward to Hakata (Fukuoka) in approximately 1 hour by Nozomi, or eastward back toward Osaka (Shin-Osaka) in around 45 minutes by Nozomi, or Kyoto in approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.
Hiroshima Bus Center: For those exploring the wider Chugoku and Shikoku regions, highway buses depart from the Hiroshima Bus Center, connected to Hiroshima Station via the tram or a short taxi ride.
If you are renting a car to explore the scenic countryside around Hiroshima, several major car rental companies — including Toyota Rent a Car and Nippon Rent-A-Car — have branches either inside or immediately adjacent to Hiroshima Station.
Arriving at Hiroshima Station, you will find a modern, recently renovated building with two main exits: the South Exit (Minami-guchi), which faces the city center and is where most travelers will want to head first, and the North Exit (Shinkansen-guchi), which serves the shinkansen platforms directly and connects to bus services and taxis. The station facilities include convenience stores (including 7-Eleven and NewDays), ATMs (Japan Post and Seven Bank, which accept international cards), luggage storage lockers in various sizes, and a tourist information counter where English-language maps and brochures are available.
The surrounding Minami Ward area is lively, with plenty of restaurants, cafés, and hotels within walking distance of the station. From here, the Peace Memorial Park is approximately 2 kilometers to the west, easily reachable by tram, taxi, or a scenic 25-minute walk along the Kyobashi River.
