I took the Renfe AVE Internacional from Barcelona to Perpignan for a quick hop across the border into southern France. The direct Renfe service is smooth and scenic, taking just under 1 hour and 30 minutes. It’s the kind of trip where you can sit back with a coffee from the bar, watch the landscape unfold through the wide windows, and arrive in Perpignan feeling rested and eager to explore. For anyone considering the route, here's everything you need to know.
The Barcelona to Perpignan train covers around 175 km, running north along the Mediterranean coast before crossing into southern France through the Perthus tunnel. The total trip from city center to city center takes just under 1 hour and 30 minutes, making it one of the quickest international connections from Catalonia. Overall, this is a very comfortable alternative to driving. With spacious seating and steady speeds, you can simply relax and enjoy the changing scenery.
I booked my First Class seat on Omio about a month in advance and paid €52. The mobile ticket arrived within minutes after completing my booking, which made boarding easy with a quick QR scan at the gate. Barcelona Sants is a large, modern station with plenty of shops and eateries to pass the time before departure. I recommend arriving early for a relaxed start and grabbing a coffee while watching the platforms fill with travelers heading north. As with most trains in Spain, there’s both a security control and a separate ticket control before you can enter the platform area, but the process is smooth and well organized, just as you’d expect from Renfe.
Barcelona Sants is one of Spain’s main high-speed hubs and the starting point for many international routes. The layout is intuitive and easy to navigate, and you’ll find familiar fast food like McDonald’s and several coffee shops and bakeries, including two Caffe de l’Estació branches. If you’re in a rush, you can grab ready-to-eat meals and prepacked sandwiches from the shops, or pick up chips and soft drinks from vending machines located around the station.
Perpignan station is a short walk from the city center, so you step off the train already close to hotels and shopping areas. Outside the main exit, you’ll find a taxi rank and local buses. From here, it’s easy to reach the historic quarter on foot without needing any additional transport.
Renfe’s AVE services on this international corridor run twice daily in each direction, departing at 8:19 AM and 4:34 PM. I took the morning train, and the total journey lasted less than 1 hour and 30 minutes. Arriving before mid-morning left me with the full day ahead to explore and even catch a beautiful sunset later that evening in Perpignan.
Even though the ride from Barcelona to Perpignan lasts only about 90 minutes, traveling in First Class felt calm and comfortable. With the seat reclined, I had plenty of legroom to stretch out. Like other Renfe AVE routes, there’s onboard Wi-Fi, which worked well enough to check messages and browse the news. The PlayRENFE app also has newspapers, documentaries, and even language courses if you want entertainment along the way. There’s a small bar car where I picked up a morning coffee and croissant pastry, served with the usual tidy presentation and friendly crew. For luggage, there are overhead racks and larger stacks at the ends of each carriage. My First Class ticket included up to three bags of 25 kg each. I didn’t need my ID or passport when crossing the border, but it’s always worth bringing yours in case railway staff does a spot check. Most of the trip offers nice countryside views as the train moves from Catalonia’s coastal plains into the green foothills. It passes through the Perthus tunnel for several minutes before emerging into wide-open scenery just before arrival in Perpignan.
Book at least four weeks in advance to find the best fares and secure your preferred First Class seat. I booked through Omio about a month ahead and received my mobile ticket instantly. Thanks to QR codes, boarding is super quick and easy at Barcelona Sants.
