Ferry Routes Norway: Getting Out of the Country
Most ferry journeys in Norway begin in the capital, Oslo. From here, you can explore more of the country, travel to another Scandinavian port, or see what countries like Germany and the United Kingdom have to offer. See below for some of the most popular ferry routes leaving from Oslo.
Ferry Companies Traveling From and to Norway
Most major Norwegian ferry routes are run by Fjord Line and DFDS.
DFDS runs the main ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo, as well as Oslo to Copenhagen. This Danish ferry company has been in business since the 1860s and runs a large fleet that includes over a dozen modern ships, including catamarans and hydrofoils. It connects routes across the North Sea and further afield, including ferries in and out of Sweden, Denmark, France, and the United Kingdom, as well as several options in Norway.
Fjord Line is a Norwegian operator that launched in 1993 and spans the Nordic region, focusing on trips in and out of Norway. The most popular routes available through Fjord Line include the Bergen to Stavanger ferry and Hirtshals to Stavanger ferry.
Omio has partnered with both of these ferry operators, so you can book tickets for all of these popular Norway ferry routes and more. Just click the links above if any of these routes catch your eye, or use the search feature at the top of this page to plot a different route.
Ferry Ports in Norway
As noted above, Oslo is the main port in Norway. Over 50% of the country’s population lives within a three-hour drive of the Port of Oslo, so it’s accessible to most of the country and not just the 600,000+ people who call this city home. The ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo is one of the busiest, but it also runs routes in and out of many other ports.
Located in the west of the country, the Port of Bergen is the second biggest in the country and is a major hub for cruise and ferry passengers traveling from surrounding Scandinavian nations, as well as the United Kingdom.
Stavanger is the third-biggest Norway ferry port. It primarily deals with the commodities trade, but it has a rapidly expanding ferry and cruise industry, with an increasing number of calls from ports across Scandinavia.
There are also major ports in Flekkefjord, Borg, Drammen, and Haugesun.
Ferry from Other Countries
Norway is one of the cleanest and most naturally diverse countries in the world. It often tops global tables for the best places to live and visit and has a wealth of top towns and cities packed with history and culture. It’s no surprise then that it has become such a popular destination for international tourists. You can take a ferry into Norway from several surrounding countries, including:
Denmark
The ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo isn’t just one way! You can hop on a ship from Oslo, spend the night in luxury accommodation, and then arrive in Copenhagen the following day!
Sweden
We mentioned the Oslo to Malmö ferry at the top of this page. It’s a low-cost way to cross between these countries and see one of the most culturally rich cities in Scandinavia. But it’s not the only connection between these two countries. There are ferries from Malmö to Bergen for around the same price and journey time as the ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo, as well as a Lund to Oslo ferry.
Germany
The Kiel to Oslo ferry will take you from Germany to the Norwegian capital. The route takes about 20 hours and is covered by ships that are fully equipped with a range of amenities to ensure you have everything that you need during your trip.
The Netherlands
Unless you’re willing to add a bus or train to your journey, there are few options for taking the ferry from the Netherlands into Norway. But that wasn’t always the case. A ferry route between these two countries did open in the spring of 2022 and was offered by a startup called Holland Norway Lines, but the company filed for bankruptcy in August 2023, and the route is no longer available.
