I am from Santiago de Compostela, and when I travel to Portugal, I often find myself passing through Porto. There are no direct flights from Galicia to Porto, so it is often necessary to travel by road. The last few times I traveled to Porto, I have taken the bus from A Coruña. I knew it was going to be a long journey, but sometimes the times just worked out better that way. It is not the quickest way to get there, but it does take you all the way from Galicia into northern Portugal without having to change trains.

Old café and tea shop in Porto
The route between A Coruña and Porto covers roughly 300 kilometers, connecting Galicia with northern Portugal. Several companies operate this route, including ALSA, FlixBus, BlaBlaCar Bus and Rede Expressos. The journey usually takes around four to five hours, depending on the service and traffic conditions. Most buses travel south through Galicia before crossing the border into Portugal and continuing toward Porto.
The first time I took this route I already knew it would be a fairly long ride, so I arrived at the station prepared for several hours on the road. After leaving A Coruña, the bus travels south across Galicia before eventually crossing into Portugal. The scenery changes slowly along the way: small towns, stretches of countryside and long sections of highway before the outskirts of Porto begin to appear. It’s not the fastest journey, but it’s very straightforward. Once you’re on the bus, you mostly settle in and let the kilometers pass.
Buses from A Coruña will normally depart from Estación de Autobuses de A Coruña, which is the main bus station in the city. The station is not too far from the center of the city and can easily be accessed by taxi or local buses.
Most of the buses that arrive in Porto will stop at Campanhã, which is close to the Porto Campanhã railway station. It is easy to access the city center from there using the metro, which connects the station to other areas like Trindade and the rest of Porto.
Buses between A Coruña and Porto run every day, with several departures depending on the day and the company. Operators such as ALSA, FlixBus, Rede Expressos and BlaBlaCar Bus connect the two cities, and the journey usually takes a little over four hours.
The buses used on this route are standard long-distance coaches with reclining seats and luggage storage underneath.
For a journey of several hours, most passengers simply settle in for the ride. Some read or listen to music, others try to sleep while the bus continues south toward Porto.
The cost of the ticket depends on the operator and the time of booking, but it is generally not too expensive given the distance. Here’s what one of my journeys might have looked like:
| Item | Cost (eur) |
|---|---|
| Ticket price | €25 |
| Food & drinks | €5 |
| Travel to departure station | €2 |
| Travel from arrival station | €2 |
| Total | € 34 |
However, the long trip is always worth it when I finally get to Porto. One of the things that I enjoy most about this city is taking a stroll around, looking for a place where I can have some grilled fish. This is one of the things that Porto does best. I also enjoy browsing through second-hand shops and small independent stores. And if I have the time, I always make it a point to visit the Galeria Cruzes Canhoto, which is an unusual art gallery located on Rua Miguel Bombarda and is famous for its collection of outsider and folk art. After the long bus ride from Galicia, spending the afternoon in that manner is the best way for me to arrive in Porto.
